Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harper Dhadde. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Harper, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Genie In A Bottle is about being overlooked. It is based on a true story.
I had a crush on a man. And whenever I’d converse with this man, he’d make me feel insignificant. I was willing to lower my standards to receive his affection, but instead of pining for him I wrote ‘Genie In A Bottle’ about deserving “magic” because I am “magic”.
He was more interested in the other girls in his life that would provide the bare minimum, men like him don’t want a driven and independent woman. I had to realize that I didn’t need him in my life. In fact, he had more to gain from a relationship with me.
Furthermore, men in the music industry tend to brag about themselves to “prove their worth” to me, as if they’re a stepping stone in my career. Women are assumed to be insecure, so people don’t expect me to be so confident in my artistic vision. There are things that I could provide, in a relationship and a career, that men don’t see when they think they’re better than me.
Harper, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have been a singer since watching Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel in the early 2000’s. I began producing and releasing music and creating an artist in 2019. With the release of my first single ‘2009’ in 2020, I solidified my artistic world by creating a nostalgic narrative with a modern twist. I still write, produce, record, and engineer my music independently in my home studio.
The main character of my artistic world is a creative soul stuck in her mind reliving the past with no way out except through her artistry. Ruminating thoughts don’t leave my brain until they’re in a song. It is as if the story of each song leaves my mind and materializes into the world of the artist. The world also comes to fruition with my fashion choices, music videos, and social media content. In the world, I’m the girl I’ve always wanted to be: an icon.
I am most proud of my growth. As my technique improves, my unique sound still shines through. And people like working with me because I’ve successfully kept in touch with my unique perspective.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
However superficial it might sound, my goal is to make a living. Of course, I aim for great commercial success, but I could be satisfied without it. I want to live life with passion, and I want to be able to create freely without the possibility that rug might be pulled from under my feet at any time. I have a story to tell, songs to write, and lives to touch, but I can’t do that without financial stability.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The feeling I get the moment I realize that somebody connects with my art when I didn’t even notice. I find videos on TikTok that use my audio without the creator tagging me. And then I think about the playlists my songs are added to. I am not sure if my music provides comfort, entertainment, an escape, etc. for the listener, but I give them a feeling that they want to feel again. Enough so that they added the song to their playlist. They resonate, not because they have a connection to me, but because they have a connection to the song. They hear the world I’ve created and choose to come back.
