We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Harold Waight a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Harold thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so we’d love to hear about how you got your first client or customer. What’s the story?
My first sale ever was at the museum of contemporary art, I was enrolled in a program called the junior docent program in Miami Florida. I was able to exhibit at this museum and one of my pieces sold. At the time I had made a pastel art piece . It was a blown image of concrete fixtures. I had gained the inspiration to create this piece from being around my dad when I’d accompany him to his construction jobs. This painting sold for $50.00, I was so happy! I remember taking a picture of the piece and printing it out and saying “my ever sold painting, the journey starts here”. Ive been on a journey of creation ever since.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
-My name is Harold James Alexander Waight and I am a Belizean American Artist currently residing in Brooklyn NY.
-I have always held a passion for creation and the art of.
-I have a strong background in fashion photography. However my area of discipline and primary focus are paintings. I studied art all throughout my early years of education until I was ready to go college.
– I provide paintings. I create paintings that touch on social consciousness by raising awareness around topics of interest such as human rights, equal rights, global warming, etc. some of my paintings tell stories through surreal settings while other pieces highlight my interpretation of a diverse world.
-through my career as an artist I have also helped organize marches for equal rights. Given back to communities through charity work and donations snd raised money for organizations to help homeless lgbtqia+ youth.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Before moving to New York City, I had lost everything. My childhood was filled with love and compassion. However, my mother became severely ill and had to move back to Belize, so at 18 I was now on my own. I ended up living out of my car and shortly after I sold my car and moved to New York with less than $200 and a dream. My journey has not been an easy one, I’ve dealt with racism, homelessness, discrimination, assault & profiling. Through it all I aim to focus on a better tomorrow through helping others so that I can ease the pain and sorrow people might be dealing with. In my current series that I have yet to reveal, the theme is mental health. In my paintings I challenge the audience to think deep. In a world where everything is so surface and the public is spoon fed, my pieces require deeper analysis and I truly try to cater to the intelligent audience, the audience who wants to collect art that initiates a conversation, art that challenges perspective. Art that initiates change.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
I believe my personality and desire for understanding people has helped me build my reputation. The majority of my following comes from when I worked in fashion as a fashion photographer. I. Had helped build and establish many careers through my guidance, my connections, and my images. As I focus Shifting my audience from fashion to art I find that my new connections are coming from the not so pretentious side of art. My connections are coming from people who truly care about the craft, about art with purpose, the state of our world as far as people and the conditions that affect people.
