We were lucky to catch up with Harmony Devoe recently and have shared our conversation below.
Harmony, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I grew up in church and was with a female gospel group. One of my closest friends approached me and told me my gift was greater than me. She pushed me and helped me build confidence in myself as a singer and songwriter, having introduced me to veteran greats in the music industry.
I was a rapper in college, poet since childhood and then a songwriter. I became a published one after I moved to Florida from Detroit, Michigan in 2006, releasing my first (3) R&B songs for Artist Lori King’s “Still in Love” Album. I would always just write songs for Artist and do the background vocals. I never wanted the fame and was very shy. When I moved to Florida, people would ask me who was singing the background vocals and who wrote the song. I was encouraged to record a demo track. Me, a church girl, who did not have the confidence until my former spouse threw me in front of a stage and created our band, “Optimistic Vibe.” The rest is history. I’ve always known I was created to entertain since Pre-school, when I would take over the class singing and dancing. The teacher told my mom to place me in private school, because I needed more attention than public school could provide.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
I am Harmony Devoe, and I am Lyricism in Motion® which means I have the ability to merge metaphoric words with melodic sounds, and I call this Floeticizm™ Have you ever gotten lost in a song and have tears, smile, feel angry, horny or warm inside? Moved by the song? Well, that is what I love about my creativity. I love making others feel my music not only through my lyrics but my sound. I am a Detroit native by way of Tampa, Florida, and my poetic songwriting style provides the perfect recipe for soothing the body, mind, and soul. Well, that’s me as an Artist and Songwriter! I am also a CEO, a model, aspiring actress, a single mother of 2 boys, a retired licensed cosmetologist, an educated black woman with a Bachelor’s degree, Masters degree, and I’ve completed (2) of 4 years of my doctoral studies in education, counseling, and supervision. I am also a prayer warrior, believer of Christ, and a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
I released my first debut single, “Your Piano,” and then the remix in 2017, on my “Chronicles of a Lyricist,” Album. This musical arrangement entails a kiss on the ebonies and ivories, the exquisite strum of the bass, and my sensual alto sound with seductive lyrics, resulting in an explosion of indescribable “floetic” symmetry! This song is also a musician favorite! Fun Fact: Harmony was classically trained as a Pianist for (14) years as a child and this single exposes Harmony’s musical knowledge.
When I released my Album entitled, “Chronicles of a Lyricist,” in 2017, I simultaneously released a Neo-Soul Gospel single, “Lord Ur Love,” taking me back to her Gospel roots This track is smooth, catchy, up lifting, and inspirational, reaching both listeners of secular and Gospel music. I am a multi-faceted lyrical creator, with the ability to enhance any musical composition of any genre.
I later exposed my rapper roots with her “club banging, bass bumping” single, “Never Low,” and then an R&B Classic vibe, “The Friend Zone.” She also wrote, produced and released a world genre song, America So Strong.” This single will bring tears as you listen, because it was written in support of the US Military, essential workers, and families impacted by the COVID pandemic. My floeticizm continued with my seductive single, “The View,” and steamy music video. Shortly after “The View,” I released a dope-a-licious club/DJ favorite, the “Friend Zone (Remix),” ft. Darius J.
My latest release, “When U Fall Outta Luv,” ft. JaKeith, is the trending COVID-19 break up ballad of the century! This duet speaks to the real, gutter raw situations in the home, honing in on the torturous emotional fallout of a broken relationships during our generation’s most devastating pandemic. My single “The View” is currently charting nationally and I’m bringing back R&B with style and grace! I am trying to make an impact with my music, and my Vlog talk series, Grown Woman Talk Vlog on YouTube (GWTOfficialvlog).
As the CEO of my company, J3Lyricology, LLC., not only do I represent myself as an Artist, Singer/Songwriter, and I owner of my music catalog, I also provide education, and consult with other Indie Artist on how to register, promote and market their music, through my new venture, “The Floeticizm Project via YouTube (The Floeticizm Project).
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I am a single mother of two boys and a survivor of domestic violence. I raised my children as a single parent while married, with no child support or assistance from anyone and at the same time, began pursuing my musical career and my post graduate degree. I am the true definition of perseverance, and I relocated to Florida not knowing anyone and started my life over for peace. I don’t do negative nouns when dealing with people, places or things. I move in a positive direction, manifesting only the positive. That’s what Lyricism in Motion® represents! Quitting has never been an option for me! I pray, grind, win! (P.G.A.) in that order, trusting God to do the rest every step of the way! I manifest greatness for me and my little kings! I have abundance in all that I do!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Oh good Lord yes! I wish I had a strong team from the beginning of my musical journey that would have been able to protect me from the scurviness in this industry and could take me to a major level in the industry. I’m grateful for the team of people are currently in my life! Those that have embraced me, pushed me, and genuinely want to see me win! Without them, I would not have made it this far on my journey! Shout outs to my Boys, Jordan & Jadon, my biggest fans and support! Susan Maida of Bent String Studios, Anthony Thomas of VWurldUverse, Allen J. Johnson (photographer/videographer), Tobias Tankard Sr. (Booking Agent), Ron Law (marketing/promotion), Kadillac Kat (Kadillac Kat Morning Show), and several others who constantly provide me with uplift, encouragement, support, help, advice, and prayer! Most importantly, they give me their time, which is the most precious gift ever!
I so wish when I began on my musical journey, that I was more knowledgeable about the music industry and all of the pitfalls that Artist can go through. It’s almost like a “hazing process,” of getting ripped off and scammed. Knowing your budget for radio promo campaigns, and other marketing platforms. Knowing how to register and encode your music, where to register your music, where to distribute, social media platforms, and how to promote yourself as an Artist successfully, and so on and so forth. No one knows everything and most of what I have learned has been through hard lessons learned. Those lessons have molded me into who I am Today! I am a winner sitting on a billion-dollar empire, J3Lyricology! I am still aiming for the moon, and when I land, I will most definitely be amongst the stars! Thank you to all who have supported me, downloaded/streamed and shared about me! And thank you to YOU, Canvas Rebel Magazine, for sharing my story with the world!
