Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Harley Johnson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Harley, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
For the last decade I’ve used graphic designing, event coordination and country dancing as a sense of therapy and hobby I loved. Creating, bringing things to life and bring joy to people’s lives in some sort of fashion has always been my thing.
While I was on deployment in 2023, I knew I needed to find something to make my transition out of the Marine Corps easier. So I decided to turn those hobbies into a lifestyle / business. I wasn’t entirely ready to leave the Corps, but I needed too. I knew I had a lot of skills, but didn’t really know where I wanted to be. So I took a leap of faith and ran with it.

Harley, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My favorite part of my business, is my mentality of “not one size fits all,” because it doesn’t. Not everybody’s ideas, logos, graphics, branding or style is the same. Even if it’s the same industry, no one person is the exact same. So Misschif Media is built on providing a plethora of services, like a one stop shop for all your media or event needs.
Everything I do has been a hobby that I turned to being able to provide for people like small businesses, dance events, musicians and more. Whether it’s a seasoned client just needed guidance, because social media is ALWAYS changing, brand new to the social media world, a musician needing content, photos or a gig covered, or simply building an event to build a community. My motto is “be a decent effing human” and adding emphasis on that, because the world is crazy, and need to come together in some shape or form.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Being authentically me. Whether you met me as just Harley, as a Marine, dancer, business owner, etc, I am who I am, nothing more, nothing less.
It’s something I encourage to clients as well. People come, engagement and refer you because it’s you and your work vs putting on a mask.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
To keep showing up. There are days and have been weeks where it was dry. No clients besides my usually monthly, no big engagement, gigs, anything, but I still kept showing up.
Posting, even if it was simple, engaging with groups, posts, sharing, showing up to events, whatever it was, you still saw me. I still interacted with people even when I was struggling, because I knew that’s what needed to be done. Some days you’ll want to give up, because even your friends and family aren’t there, but you just have to keep showing up.
