We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Harley Hendrixx. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Harley below.
Harley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The mission of my family’s crafting business is to turn as much sadness to love throughout the world. The business started after I decided to ask my mom to teach me to crochet as a way to help us both get through the grief of losing my big sister in 2021. Not only did I love crochet, we were creating things that people had a demand for. From there, Ganell’s crafts was born. It is our goal to send tokens of our family’s love to as many families as we can. It is our hope that the family members that come after us will continue the legacy.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Harley Hendrixx. After retiring from teaching, I was looking for a different way to be an agent for change in this world. Shortly after, I discovered the Hapi app. Hapi is a platform for anonymous venting. I am certified as listener on the app. In the midst of being certified, I lost my sister to illness. In an effort to help myself and my mom cope with the grief, I asked her to teach me to crochet. When I realized how much I love to crochet, I asked my mom how she felt about starting a crafting business. The rest is, as they say, history. It is our mission to send handmade tokens of love to as many people as we can.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing our clientele has been love and authenticity. We have a family business. The beauty of that is there is no image to create or maintain. Our business is essentially a peek into our family which makes it super easy to appeal to our customers.
How’d you meet your business partner?
My business partner is my mom so we know how I met her. But, I wanted to use this space to praise her for being the driving force of my motivation. My mother has been an entrepreneur my entire life. She owned her hair salon and made a good living doing braids and other styles. The funny thing is, as a community we aren’t taught to value entrepreneurship. So growing up I was always confused as to why my mom didn’t have a traditional job. It was not until I became an adult that I realized she was a trailblazer years ahead of her time. She planted seeds of ownership and leadership into my life early and I had no idea. As I grew into an adult, I was less afraid of taking the leap to be my own boss because I was raised by a boss. She is amazing and I wanted to highlight her in this moment.
