We were lucky to catch up with Haritha Nukala recently and have shared our conversation below.
Haritha, appreciate you joining us today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Photographs/pictures remind us of wonderful times, and help us remember stories and shared moments around that picture. That’s why I named my business “Memories by Haritha”, because I want to help capture these precious moments/memories in people’s lives.

Haritha, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I am an engineer by education, a program manager by profession, and a photographer by passion. I love capturing portraits of families, couples, and children. Capturing memories that families can look back on and that helps bring a smile to their faces is one of my favorite things. I also love capturing dancers/dance forms and freeze their movements on frame.
I started my photography business on the side, as photography for me is a creative outlet. This business gives me the ability to pursue what I love, along with giving me an income that I can use to fund my travels – my second passion.
I love working with clients and their vision, this helps me give them a customized portrait session. I love taking portraits because it not only gives me my creative outlet, but it also helps me make new friends. Meeting new people and getting to know them while I capture their memories and smiles is one of the best parts of this job.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been giving them a good and personalized experience. I take the time to get to know my clients and their vision for their photoshoots. Sometimes it might be a simple family portrait, sometimes it might be a special vision that they want to ensure is executed and they get the pictures they are envisioning.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I wouldn’t say that the journey was a cakewalk, but it hasn’t been that difficult either. As an artist, it is hard to put your work out for the world to see and judge. From the time I started to the current point, I have been growing both as a photographer and as a person. Starting my own business taught me a lot of things, from creating an LLC to running my own books as well as the art of dealing with customers. My expertise in working with clients from my weekday job helps me navigate customers in my photography business as well.
One thing that I never anticipated when I started my photography business was the need to educate my customers. Oftentimes, the customers are not aware of what it means to hire a photographer for their services – that it includes their expertise in posing, locations, curation of pictures, etc. Also, photography as an industry is pretty saturated and it is difficult to gain clientele who love your style of work and trust you.
I wish I had a full-time lifestyle photography business, but I am glad to be in contact with creative people around me who love to experiment and collaborate with me. As a full-time working professional and a single mom, squeezing in editing time is the most challenging for me!
