We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hanniyah Cross a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hanniyah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I still feel like I’m fairly early in my own practice to be honest. I’ve been in my career for the last 6 years or so and I’m just now finding my stride. I’ve studied what I do for well over a decade and I’m constantly learning new things. The occult and esoteric is something that takes a lifetime of study and dedication. It won’t be anything you master overnight.
Framing yourself as a life long student would probably be my biggest advice for anyone starting a wellness business. There will always be something new to learn and someone to learn from. Seeking teachers, elders, and community to connect with will constantly illuminate the areas you need growth in. If you’re always learning you’re always growing.
No one is an expert. None of us know what the f*ck we’re doing. So there’s always room for growth. Seeking knowledge and wisdom will bring assurance that you’re in the right path.
Hanniyah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a psychic reader specializing in Tarot and intuitive counseling. I’ve been reading professionally for nearly a decade and been witchy since I could speak.
I picked up my first deck at the age of 16 and never really put the cards down. I’ve always been a spiritual person, being raised in the church, but struggled to find a way to connect the religion with the way I spiritually perceived nature and the world around me.
What I originally used only as a form of self discovery quickly opened the doors to futher occult study, and the development of my own spiritual praxis.
I’ve dedicated myself to the art of tarot as well as the veneration, study and documentation of the indigenous spiritual practices and magic of my ancestors who walked before me.
The answers to questions do not come from me they come from Spirit. I am merely a conduit, and go-between. I traverse the liminal to illuminate the things you need to know for your highest good and the highest good of all involved.
I’m also generally a nerd. You can find me on the internet talking about books most days.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being myself! I am my biggest advertisement. By being authentically me on the internet and in person I attract the type of clientele I want. I’m silly, sarcastic, and a little abrasive. But I find that showing more of who I truly am versus who I think people want to see filters clientele who want to grow and truly receive knowledge.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Community. A profession like this cannot exist in a solitary space. Not only do you need elders and community members to hold you accountable. But you also need people around to nurture you as you nurture others. You cannot pour from an empty cup and sometimes you need help pouring in general.
