Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hanne Koppelman. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hanne, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Do you think folks should manage their own social media or hire a professional? What do you do?
With degrees from England and Australia in Media, Communication, and Advertising, along with a background in online marketing, I manage all my social media personally. I believe social media should be about being genuine and authentic. If you’re not true to your own voice, you risk losing your audience’s interest. Creating a fake persona can attract a client base that doesn’t match your values, but aligning with your clients is essential. In real estate, I aim to find homes for people’s hearts and souls, which is a deeply personal process involving both joy and challenges. That’s why I handle everything myself, embracing the entire journey.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Passionate about family homes, I left my corporate online marketing career in 2009 to focus on being a wife and mother. Balancing business with raising my children, I began renovating our Boston house, drawing on my upbringing with my mom’s renovations and my love for house flipping and garden rescue shows. I transformed our home with real wood floors, marble countertops, and recessed lighting, even designing the master bath and moving walls. After relocating to Seattle, the sale of our Boston house exceeded expectations, which lead to a successful venture in flipping homes across Washington, California, and Norway. Becoming a licensed real estate broker was a natural progression, and I’ve enjoyed working with clients to buy and sell homes ever since.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
As independent contractors in real estate, and especially as women, we may feel pressure to conform to certain expectations about our appearance, speech, or work style. However, in a relationship-driven and service-oriented industry like real estate, authenticity and honesty are crucial. Whether guiding clients through the home-buying process or representing them in listings, establishing trust is essential. Clients are entrusting you with one of the most significant transactions of their lives, so presenting a genuine and trustworthy version of yourself is vital. Being transparent allows you to serve, guide, and protect your clients effectively, leading to satisfied clients who may refer you to their friends. Ultimately, being true to yourself is always better than fitting into a mold. When in doubt, honesty and authenticity are your best allies.
How’d you meet your business partner?
When I first entered real estate, I worked for a few months for an agency that relied on tactics like cold calling, door knocking, and scripted interactions. Though less comfortable with this approach, I persevered through the agency’s database. One of those contacts was a Windermere broker. Our honest and candid conversation was eye-opening and led to me moving to Windermere. This broker guided me toward a more fulfilling path, and since joining Windermere, I’ve never looked back.
