We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Wert a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
I worked as part of the in-house creative team at Bai Brands, which later became a part of Keurig Dr Pepper, for five years. What once was a job that included a lot of styling and art directing photoshoots quickly became mostly packaging design over the course of the pandemic. Even though my background is in graphic design, I missed the creativity and hands-on work of photoshoots. I started taking on side projects while maintaining my full-time job so that I could get back to the work I really wanted to do. Shooting on the weekends with my friend and fellow co-worker allowed us to explore what it was like to work on our own. It became clear pretty quickly that we could have a photography business, but that we would need to leave our jobs in order to have more time. It was a hard decision, but I knew that taking a risk is what I needed to grow. Being able to choose my own path has been incredibly rewarding. It’s not always easy, but I am so grateful to be where I am.
Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
From studying architecture and then graphic design my path wasn’t always linear. It took time to land where I am now. I knew I had an eye for design and composition, but when I started working as a designer I didn’t know anything about the photography world. When I was first exposed to styling and art directing at a design job I felt like I could take my love for design, but see it beyond the computer screen. It was energetic and freeing. Now that I co-own my business Vambora Creative with photographer Eli DeFaria, and work as a freelance stylist and art director, I get to create in a way that feels right to me. My job is all about taking a product and bringing it to life. I love connecting with clients and collaborating to create a photoshoot that helps elevate their brand. Photography, advertising and design is something every business needs. It’s incredibly rewarding to know that my creativity helps businesses grow and thrive.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Vambora Creative is a studio that is bold and colorful. Not only is our work vibrant, but we pride ourselves on making photoshoots fun and collaborative. Atmosphere and energy is one of the most important things to us. We take the time to get to know our clients and make sure that their voices are heard and that they enjoy themselves while working with us.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
My business partner and I met while working at a beverage company. We were both on the creative team and our jobs were very connected. We quickly became close friends and knew how much we enjoyed creating and collaborating together. When our roles began changing at our full-time jobs we started to take on more side projects together outside of work. From there, we knew we had what it took to start a business. We left our jobs in 2021 and haven’t looked back!
