Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hannah Vaughn. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hannah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Alright, let’s jump into one of the most exciting parts of starting a new venture – how did you get your first client who was not a friend or family?
When I started Ptty.Pics I wasn’t really sure where to begin in regards to getting clients. I felt like a small fish in a big pond. I began reaching out to local models and artists and offering free shoots in order to build my portfolio. I started being able to connect with clients and posting my work on Instagram. That’s where my business really began all because some local creatives gave me an opportunity.

Hannah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Hannah Vaughn, I’m originally from St.Louis and moved to Kansas City in middle school. I have moved around the country most of my life but Kansas City is the one place that has always felt like home. I have always been into art and photography my whole life but never really thought it would be something I later in life would take seriously. About a year ago I picked up my first real camera, I took the time to study and learn editing and how to use my equipment. Ever since then I have been pushing my creativity and my skills to better myself as an artist. I believe the biggest thing that sets me apart is I also do modeling, so I understand what looks good in front of a camera and how to make clients feel comfortable. The main thing I want clients to feel after a session is that they are beautiful and they are powerful.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I started building my audience on Instagram, by following local models and artists I already knew. From there I would reach out to people, really just put my name out there and generate interest. My biggest piece of advice to anyone starting is to network heavily and get your work out there. Posting quality work on social media and being consistent is a game changer.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say the most rewarding part of being a photographer is seeing how clients react to my work. I want everyone I work with to walk away feeling the most beautiful and confident they have ever felt. Being able to see someone’s face light up from my work is what pushes me to be a better creative.
