We recently connected with Hannah Uche and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Sometimes you need to be changed before you can change others. Sometimes you need to be developed before you can develop others. Sometimes you have to be taught before you can teach others. The most meaningful project I have worked on was my debut short film, The Domino Effect. It was meaningful not just for the audience it was intended to reach, but for my personal development as a filmmaker and director. In 2021, production began for the short film. However, I didn’t have all the tools and resources that I needed. I figured that I could just “wing-it” and allow the film to produce itself. I had a lot of ambition, but not so much strategy. I was very naive to the filmmaking process, and all the work that goes into it. There wasn’t enough equipment, actors, crew members, or money. I underestimated just how tedious, collaborative, and complex making a film really is, so I had to postpone the production of this film. It discouraged me a little bit because I’m used to starting a thing and following through on it without any pushback or delay. But this was the first time in my life that I experienced having to abandon a project temporarily in order to find my “drive” and my “why”, in addition to making proper preparation. All of the work and content I create is inspired by God. Since He was the source of the script, I had to go back to Him to get insight on how to bring that script to life, His way. Before I could work on anything, God had to work on me first. So the summer of 2021 to the summer 2022 was spent hearing from God about the film idea, developing a stronger production team, and allowing the message of the film to speak to me first before it speaks to others. In this process, I found God in a deeper and different way. The difference between production in 2021 and 2022 was like night and day. The personal growth was evident in the way I carried myself as a director. It is very real when they say “the journey is the destination” because the process of producing The Domino Effect is one that I will cherish for a really long time. Prayerfully, for the rest of my life. So this film project was not just meaningful because it was my first one. It was meaningful because it showed me who God is and how He refined me in a remarkable way to achieve His purpose
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Image of God Media was launched in 2019 and its sole purpose is to expand and multiply God’s Kingdom through photography, videography, cinematography, and film. I essentially desire for the multimedia industry to be transformed to look like heaven on earth. I do offer personal and event media services at request. However, my main desire is to use Image of God Media to win souls to the Kingdom of Christ. I believe my ministry is unique because I am able to share the word of God and the gospel in innovative and intriguing ways. I get to tap into my creativity in order to bring ideas to life that ultimately will draw people to God. Not too many people are doing what I do, which is freeing because there’s so much creative license. Image of God Media is for everybody. That is my audience. As long as you have breath in your lungs, what I do is for you. I want to reach you with the sweet message of the gospel because that is truly what can save you. How I share that with you, is through visual art.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had more representation, in terms of women who look like me and share the same faith, trying to break into the media sphere. I wish I knew about specific film funding opportunities and communities of filmmakers that understand your vision and can offer support.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is when you can appreciate your own art. My work is not just for an external audience but the content I create is for myself too. Not many passions allow you to do this because the product is strictly for the client. But, I can always watch one of my films or videos and be inspired, challenged, or encouraged.
