We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Truax a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
From the very beginning of starting my business, I knew God had called me to serve others through my photography. I feel that it’s important to give back in different ways. One of the ways I serve my community through the business and sales that my clients give me is by donating a portion of my sales to companies that I personally love standing behind. There are a few local companies/non-profits that I donate to every year and I love sharing with my clients that when they book with me, part of that is going to serve and help others.
It’s a way to bless others with the blessings I’ve received myself.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
During my own wedding planning process I started feeling passionate about getting into the wedding industry. I was already burnt out from teaching and looking for something new. I specifically felt God calling me to go into photography and I knew weddings were the main area I wanted to focus on. When my husband and I moved to Florida after our wedding, I started my photography business and starting gaining clients from there.
My main focus is wedding photography but I also capture family, couples, and lifestyle sessions. I provide all of my wedding couples with a few resources I’ve put together to help them throughout their planning process and marriage including a wedding guide and planning workbook that answers a lot of questions for them. I also regularly try to host a get together for my brides and/or couples as something fun to do together!
I’ve loved watching my business grow in a brand new state, not knowing anyone to where it is today with serving over 20 couples annually and many more families and groups of people throughout the year. While one of my main goals is to serve others through my photography and being there for them in life in general, I have truly felt blessed to meet such genuine, amazing people that have blessed my life in return.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I communicate with my clients in several different ways since I do my best to support them beyond just their wedding or session. I’m open with sharing my personal number with them where they can text or call anytime. Most of the formal information or details I give to them is shared by email through my client system (Honeybook) so it’s easy to go back to. I also usually connect with my clients on Instagram and/or Facebook so I can celebrate life updates and daily life with them.
By providing my clients with an approachable and easy way to reach me and therefore feel more comfortable with me, I try to really get to know them so that we can have a professional and friendly relationship. I let my clients know what to expect throughout their time working with me and I deliver sneak peeks to keep them excited about their photos.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I’m usually quick to trust everyone and sometimes I assume that my couples or clients understand exactly what it’s like working with a photographer. In a few different situations, there’s been some miscommunications between us or questions not addressed ahead of time and my clients have been surprised.
I don’t fault anyone for those experiences and I try my best to work with my clients to make sure they feel understood and have a great experience, but it’s taught me to be more open about the process of working with me and what’s to be expected ahead of time so it’s positive for everyone.
