We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Schaible a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hannah, thanks for joining us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
As a city Houston as a rich history however with a fast growing metropolis, sometimes history gets lost. The namesake for the brewery is one of the original neighborhoods of Houston called Frost Town. Originally named after the Frost brothers who founded the land, this small neighborhood near the Buffalo Bayou was home for a melting pot of Houstonians. Overtime due to railway and highway expansions the city lost this historical area with the last home being removed in the 90s. Our mission at Frost Town Brewing is to grasp the rich history of the city and build upon community that it once was. Taprooms and beer bring people together and if we can do that we have accomplished out mission. Frost Town is a gathering place, a home away from home.
Hannah, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The craft beer industry is new and exciting, as it grows and matures it is really in uncharted territories. What I like about the industry is that there is a sense of community and family. As a queer person in craft beer I also wanted to prioritize creating a space that my community felt comfortable in. At the brewery I want to build a space for everyone to feel welcome with freedom from judgement. Of course there is always hurdles to overcome when striving to achieve my ultimate goal but there is also a lot more joy when I hear what the brewery means to people.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
For social media it’s a fun balance of polish and being authentic. You want to come off as professional but still approachable, which is easier said than done. Everyone wants a viral moment which will get eyes on your business but it might not turn into customers. Organic steady growth is so important for the longevity of a companies presence digitally. Additionally, the digital space is ever changing every second meaning you constantly have to adapt, innovate, and evolve where it seems necessary.
Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
With in the bar/beer industry there is high turnover rates, but at Frost Town we are lucky to have a great group of staff that has bought in and cares for the business. While hiring the right people for the fit of the job/task is important, treating people as people should be the most important thing. As business owners, if we lose site of the humans within our business we have lost. Showing kindness, hard work, and truth will be returned with the right people. In turn that will attract the right people to want to be part of the company.
