We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Richey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
First off my business is called Hannah Joy Spectrum Designs because I am on the autism spectrum. I originally started making products to reduce anxiety not originally to start a business but here we’re 5 years later. I would make beaded silverware for my mom and 4 different times people asked if they could buy my product. So my mom recommended we start a business. It has certainly helped my anxiety. I feel empowered and very confident since I started my business. I still struggle with anxiety however making art has helped with that
Hannah , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Hannah Richey and I am on the autism spectrum and my therapist recommended a creative outlet for my anxiety, I started wire wrapping beads around silverware in March of 2019. I would make things for my mom and people would ask to purchase my creations and here were 5 years later.
I wire wrap glass beads around name brand silverware.
I also make glass beaded wind chimes with real drift wood.
Around Christmas time I create beaded ornaments.
I use vintage and ceramic teapots and wire beads thru the teapot to where it looks like it’s raining water.
If customers live out of state or far away I do provide shipping
Honestly I think my story is unique and I love encouraging other individuals whether it’s autism l, or any other special needs or anxiety to find their creative outlet whether it’s art or writing.
I am most proud of the fact that I am able to inspire others with my story.
Like I said before the silverware is name brand, beads are glass and ceramic and the wood for the wind chimes is drift wood. The teapots are ceramic or antique/vintage
I have a Facebook and Instagram business page called Hannah Joy Spectrum Designs.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
So I am on the autism spectrum that’s why it’s called Hannah Joy Spectrum Designs I originally started beading to reduce anxiety but then people started asking to buy my products and here were 5 years later.
We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.
I went to a local art studio and started creating art to help with anxiety and my mom and I as the business grows we try and find new ideas and new products.
