We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Reeves. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Hannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
My career in photography began after surviving two years of recovery from a car accident my husband and I were in. I found myself sitting on my bed, overwhelmed with sadness over what I had went through and the uncertain path it had led me on. I couldn’t help but wonder what my next steps should be. I couldn’t walk, I couldn’t finish school, I couldn’t work… What could I do? I knew that I loved people and I loved making them feel happy. I loved art and light and composition. I loved pictures and the amazing stories they can tell. As time went on, I taught myself the fundamentals of photography, I sought out opportunities to practice, and I began my journey of learning how to take beautiful images.
Ten years of marriage and three kids later, I look back on my decision to become a photographer and I couldn’t have chosen a better craft. Being able to authentically tell peoples stories, experience their happy moments and impactful milestones, connecting with people from all walks of life, having the opportunity to give a beautiful gift… absolutely incredible.
Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Over the past decade, I’ve had the privileged of capturing children, families, seniors, couples, and weddings through my photography. Photography as an art, like any other, can be molded and practiced and evolved over time. My goal is to become a master of my craft, humbling myself through experience, maintaining effort and curiosity despite challenges and failures, and to always find the joy in learning. All of the work I put into my business revolves around one thing: you. The reflection of my style and color and emotion is inspired by my clients from the first moment we meet, beginning a journey of getting to know who they are and what they love. My business is mainly word of mouth, intentionally marketed to not be full-time which allows me the flexibility to invest in each of my clients while prioritizing my current life stage as a homeschooling mama of three. Thinking about the heart of my business and what it stands for, my photography is less about followers, less about my appearance, less having the best photo ever… and more about sharing my gift with others and making them smile. I want them to love their photo because they see the best version of themselves and are able to look back and be reminded of the moment where they felt joy.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been recognizing that each of my photography sessions is a chance to connect on a deeper level, giving my clients the opportunity to know me better and to stand apart from other photographers because of my individual gifts. Realizing the uniqueness of knowing that not everyone will like you and yet still choosing to be yourself will give you opportunity to connect with clients that fit your brand and create a lasting impression.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
The biggest resource I wish I knew earlier in my creative journey would be just learning from others. Places and people shape the success of my work far more than I realized. Great work can come with being a part of a community, not being in isolation and having a “me against you” mindset. Becoming a friend, offering your services, and having the willingness to collaborate and spur one another on can be key toward success.
