We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Proffitt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Hannah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – walk us through the story?
Taking risks can be nerve-wracking, but they’ve also led to some of the best experiences of my life. One major risk was moving to Dhaka, Bangladesh, in 2013 to teach without knowing anyone. I arrived in a bustling city filled with vibrant culture and faced the challenge of adapting to a new environment. Initially overwhelming, it turned into an incredible journey that deepened my connection with my students and taught me about resilience and adaptability. The friendships I formed and the experiences I gained in the classroom reshaped my perspective on teaching and life.
Another significant risk I took was stepping away from the classroom after eleven years to spend a year in Hawaii without a set job. This leap into the unknown allowed me to try different roles and explore new passions. I discovered my love for baking while experimenting with recipes in my free time, which eventually led me to open a small bakery after returning home.
Both experiences were not what I initially expected, but they turned out to be some of the best decisions I’ve made. I’m grateful for these opportunities that taught me the value of taking risks and following my passions.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in Illinois and spent six years teaching overseas before settling in Arizona. I’ve been a full-time early childhood educator for the last 12 years, teaching everything from Pre-K to 3rd grade. I’ve always been an extremely motivated person who loves traveling, adventures, and trying new things. That’s what led me to this new venture—baking as a business—which, though new, has been an exciting adventure every day.
Baking has been a passion of mine since childhood, thanks to my grandmother. However, it wasn’t until 2022 that I started thinking about it as more than just a hobby. At the time, I began experimenting with protein-enriched baked goods for the gym I attended, and they loved it so much they asked me to set up a stand on Saturdays using their protein.
Last year, when I had the opportunity to live in Hawaii, I dove deeper into the local market scene. I began baking more cookies and brownies, and partnered to create delicious barks. Now, my focus is on crafting new, exciting flavors. My baked goods may not be the prettiest, but they’re always packed with incredible taste—something I’m especially proud of.
For me, it’s all about blending creativity with flavor, and I love knowing that what I bake brings joy. Though I’m new to the business side of things, the learning curve has been a rewarding adventure. I want my clients and followers to know that everything I create is authentic and made with a passion for experimenting, even if the presentation is a bit not photo worthy.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
What’s helped me build my reputation within the market is consistency and authenticity. I’ve made it a point to be present at local markets regularly and be my genuine self in the community. I truly enjoy talking to each customer, learning about them, and building real connections. I make it a priority to remember their preferences, so it’s not just about selling baked goods—it’s about creating relationships. I think people appreciate that personal touch, and it’s allowed me to grow a loyal customer base that feels more like a community.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Word of mouth has definitely been my best source of new clients. Building relationships with people at the markets has made a big difference. When customers try my new flavors and have a positive experience, they naturally share it with others. Their excitement about my products helps spread the word, and that personal recommendation has been key in growing my business.
