We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Earning a full time living from one’s creative career can be incredibly difficult. Have you been able to do so and if so, can you share some of the key parts of your journey and any important advice or lessons that might help creatives who haven’t been able to yet?
INTERIOR RUNWAY was born two years ago but I had been dreaming about owning my design firm for the last eight years. This January I went full time and have never looked back! The unknown is scary and I think that is where many entrepreneurs get stuck. It is so mental that we constantly have to be our own cheerleader. The doubt and comparison game can be such an easy distraction. We are called to be uncomfortable and until you can jump fully in you can never reach your potential. My day usually starts by 8a and never really stops. I am constantly flooded with ideas, designs, project management, and where INTERIOR RUNWAY is headed. The grind behind the design is what others don’t see but is what sets others apart. Social media gets a peak at the many hours, tears and work that goes into the creative outcome. I love it, all of it! It took me a long time to get here, many challenges and roadblocks. That’s how I knew I would succeed with INTERIOR RUNWAY. Looking back is always a good idea, I would not be who or where I am today had I not gone through the process. I am thankful for it and look forward to the next challenges to come!
Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a self taught Interior Designer. I proudly say it loud and clear. It took me a long time to get here. INTERIOR RUNWAY offers full service interior design and home renovation services. Going against the grain, not going to college, married at 20 and have 5 beautiful kids. Three of them now adults! God was already at work and I knew from a young age I would own my own company. This journey to where I am is an incredible reminder of the hustle and time it takes! I was a stay at home mom, loved fashion and babies! I didn’t go fully into the working world until my youngest went to school, but that never stopped the wheels from spinning. I used to clean apartments and deliver freshly made chocolate chip cookies, I started two children’s clothing lines, made a girls headband line, opened a children’s boutique, went through stylist school and started a jewelry line. Throughout this timeline I was always changing my house. New decor, homemade drapes, painting and even dumpster dove for a living room set. The reason I like to write all this out is that I am proof that you don’t have to do just one thing and if you’re not doing what you love yet, thats ok! Time is truly what curates who you are. I always felt that with each venture I was right at the point of success, but guess what? There was always something missing, something that wasn’t truly satisfied in myself. I got scared, let fear take over and gave up. That’s ok too. When I launched INTERIOR RUNWAY, I knew this was what I was meant to do. I love transforming ordinary spaces into unexpected, playful and functional living. I love getting to know my clients, I am humbled they allow me into their most intimate spaces and being part of their story through design.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
As INTERIOR RUNWAY develops and grows, I think it is so important to share and pursue the overall purpose of your company. I know I can blink and 4 years will have gone by. The overall hope and vision is to be sure that my gifts are giving back. Just because I am in the design community, I know there are a ton of areas we can be involved with I am excited to see what opportunities we can give of our talents and furniture resources!
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
