We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Mcdowell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, appreciate you joining us today. We’ve love to hear an interesting investment story – what was one of the best or worst investments you’ve made? (Note, these responses are only intended as entertainment and shouldn’t be construed as investment advice)
My best investments would be my trips to Paris Fashion Week and New York Fashion Week. It opened my eyes to a side of the industry that I hadn’t experienced before. The energy, the packed schedules, and the shared love for fashion with everyone around you makes for an amazing experience every time. It also gave me the opportunity to meet fashion designers and other stylists who I otherwise wouldn’t have met. Between the flights, hotel, and outfits needed to attend, it’s certainly an investment, but it’s all worth it to me every time I go.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a fashion stylist based in Los Angeles, CA. I style everyone from business people looking for new office outfits, to A-list celebrities on the red carpet. I have worked with Katy Perry, Megan Fox, Chrissy Teigen, Sofia Richie Grainge, Lupita N’yongo, and more. I style for any kind of event or just everyday looks. I also style for vacations, do client’s packing, and do closet edits.
I’m most proud of the moments when my clients feel so confident in what I styled them in. To see them glow in a whole new way is so special.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being a creative is getting to work on my own terms. I get to bring my vision to life with compete creative freedom, which I never take for granted. It’s also up to me to set boundaries in my work environment, which wouldn’t be possible in a lot of other job fields.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
I read Bob Iger’s book that touched on everything in his life, from his first day working at ABC to becoming the CEO of the Walt Disney Company. I learned a lot about delegation and management from that book, and also how to be patient in life knowing not every opportunity will come immediately.
