We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Knight. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Alright, Hannah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We believe kindness is contagious and so we’d love for you to share with us and our audience about the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
This specific senior session happened at the end of January in 2022. This mom wanted (very last minute) senior photos of her (fraternal) twin boys. Fun fact, this was my first set of twins to ever come into my business. Keep in mind that I am a photographer in a wheelchair. Where we were photographing was not very hard for me to navigate myself. However, as we were going across the grass, from one spot to the next, both times, each of these both young men, who also happen to be very tall, willingly got behind me to push me to help me get across. Yes, my younger brother was with me, but they willingly did it themselves, and I did not mind at all. It caught me off guard, in the best way possible, that they did that for me, because I had never had any type of client, whether I knew them before the session already or not, help me like these 2 gentlemen did. Of course I thanked them then and thanked them again at the end of the session. I made sure that their random act of kindness did not go unnoticed, so I told their (single, lawyer) mom later that night that I really appreciated their kind gesture. These 2 boys were raised in the best way, and I wish we had more people in the world like them.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Hannah Knight. I’m a lifestyle photographer based in Morgan County, Georgia. I specialize in serving seniors & couples who are bubbly, bright, authentic, and who love to have a fun time. I’m a lover of Jesus, Sweet Tea & Sunshine, and if you watch game shows as much as I do, you’re my new best friend. Before I tell you a little bit about myself, you will notice by looking at the picture of me, that I am a photographer in a wheelchair. I know that’s super rare to see, but I don’t let that keep me from doing what I love. It’s a complete joy to me when I see that you have chosen me to capture special memories. For that reason, I do not take my job lightly and passion for granted. Hopefully you will see what my story is while i capture yours! I think the fact that I’m in a wheelchair, doing what I love, is a huge part of what sets me a part from others, both as a photographer and a human.
My business officially began just over 7 years ago, when I was a sophomore in high school. I originally purchased a camera because my high school’s athletic director asked me if I wanted to photograph our sports. I accepted, so I started to go to as many sporting events as I could. At the beginning of this journey, I posted all my photos on facebook for all the parents to see these photos of their athlete. I had my first paid session when I was a senior, and it was senior portraits for a classmate. It took a while to develop the style of my craft/photos, but I would describe my style as vibrant, colorful, and timeless. I love working with those who have an outgoing, adventurous personality. For senior moms, the problem I solve for them when they book a session for their child with me is they no longer have zero (professionally captured) memories to look back on in 5, 10, 15+ years to come. I provide my seniors and their parents with an unforgettable, fun experience that they would (hopefully) never forget either.
Finally, a few things that I am proud of in my business is: 1) One of my sports photos has been published in USA today, 2), I attended a destination photography retreat in august 2021, and 3) for this past school year, I set a new “record” of the number of HKP seniors that I photographed in a school year, and that number was 19 for the class of 2023 (6 of which are featured in this article too). Seniors are my favorite to photograph.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Besides word of mouth, facebook is where I get most of my business from. I have been doing photography for over 7 years now, and I made the photography facebook page in June 2019. I’d say how I built up my audience through social media since then is showing up and trying to engage with my ideal clients. After each session I have, no matter the type, I post behind the scenes and sneak peeks. Sometimes, I do facebook polls about things on my page too. I post educational photography tips that my clients/non-photographers more than likely do not know. Now that reels are out on facebook too, I try to post an occasional reel that may (for example) show what the HannahK Photography experience is like.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
As mentioned above too, ever since I made the page, most of my inquiries and bookings come from facebook. It is super important to show your authenticity on any social media. The people who like your work, personality, etc., will be the your ideal clients and instantly book you.
