We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hannah Jaumot . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hannah below.
Alright, Hannah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents have encouraged my creativity since the very beginning. Growing up, my house was filled with different art projects and craft kits and my parents were always encouraging me to create. My parents were friendly with a local artist and at 12, my mom begged him to take me on as a student even though I was a bit young. They never said no when I asked for new materials and my mom always tried to learn new skills along with me. When it was time to go to college, they supported my decision to go to art school. Now that I’m a practicing artist, I know that I wouldn’t. be where I am today if it wasn’t from the support of my family.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am Hannah Jaumot, a textile and embroidery artist from Saint Augustine, Florida. Art has been my main motivation in life ever since I won first place in my school’s art competition in the first grade. A big daydreamer, I am constantly letting my mind wander and creating new worlds, creations, stories, and characters. Art has been the most important way for me to express these thoughts and make my daydreams a reality. From visual arts to theatre, the arts have always been my safe space. A former theatre kid, I l love the excessive and dramatic, finding escape through new worlds and the show-stopping. I received my BFA in Fibers with a minor in Drawing in 2023 from the Savannah College of Art and Design where I fell in love with embroidery. I am now a practicing embroidery and beadwork artist and am continuing my education at the Royal School of Needlework. My art has been on display all around the world, and my most recent accomplishment is being a finalist for Hand and Lock’s The Prize.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I think the most important first step in supporting artists is supporting art education in our schools. Most schools deal with underfunding in their art programs; I experienced this myself growing up. Schools also often discourage students from artistic careers, despite thousands of concentrations where young minds can succeed and earn a good living. Reevaluating the way we encourage art to the younger generation would make major positive change to the art community as a whole.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I have a very small but steadily growing community on social media, especially TikTok. I’ve had social media accounts running for years, as I find it an incredible source in finding new artists and inspiration. Posting more videos on apps like Instagram has been a great way of gaining new traction on my account. Social media users are becoming more interested in short form videos, so it’s important to create a few if you want your account to grow. Consistency in posting is also important to staying relevant in the algorithm. Patience is key; unless you are really lucky you aren’t going to have millions of followers overnight!
