We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Hutter a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, appreciate you joining us today. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to be remembered as someone who served and loved people really well. I firmly believe in leaving people better than you found them. And in a society that tells you not to cross oceans for people who wouldn’t cross a puddle for you, I have decided to intentionally live out the opposite. I truly believe life is about what you give, not what you get. At the very core, I hope my legacy reflects a full life well lived and what it looks like to walk in freedom because of the radical love of Jesus Christ.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Hannah Hutter. I’m 26 years old and I am a wedding and branding photographer. I am originally from a small town in Upstate, NY and I now reside in Dallas, TX. I have been a business owner for almost seven and half years now and I absolutely love creating art through photographs. I am a creative through and through and I have always loved art. I wholeheartedly believe part of the reason why I was placed on this earth is to create. Before every session I ask God to give me His eyes to see my clients the way He sees them. I believe this is the key to creating one-of-a-kind art, seeing creation through the lens of the Creator. I am highly relational and one of my most favorite aspects of my job is connecting with people! This job has brought me some of the best relationships that I hold so close to my heart and love looking back and acknowledging how many clients have turned into friends. I am blessed to have spent all of my 20’s making new connections and creating art. Some days I feel like Im living in a dream because of how sweet life is. When in reality I look back at the number of days and nights I spent praying for the things I have now. To live in an answered prayer is undoubtedly surreal.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I am actually currently in a season of pivoting! I’ve recently become so aware of how much I have put myself in a box with my approach to shooting and editing. I think for a while I felt the need to always deliver a product that looked like all the other art I’ve created in the past. Now I allow myself to be inspired by each individual session and the story of each unique client in front of me. I pay more attention to the details of the location and wardrobe, how each moment feels, the mood of the weather and the story we are trying to tell through photos. It’s been incredibly freeing to be able to create art I love without the pressure to fit a certain aesthetic or vibe. It has really helped me fall in love with photography all over again. Recently I have been creating with more of a cinematic/documentary style in mind but every now and then I will gravitate towards more of a clean and bright edit. The freedom and uncertainty of it all has helped me to produce some of the best work I have ever created (in my humble opinion).
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think building a relationship with my clients has helped me build my reputation for sure. Social media and word of mouth is how I built a clientele, so naturally my goal is to always exceed my clients expectations in the work I create for them and in their whole experience with me. From the initial call with a potential client I make it known that I am here to serve and help them in any way that I can. With my brides specifically I make sure that they are aware that it actually brings me joy to be a part of the process leading up to the wedding day. This typically looks like sending over other vendor recommendations, giving advice from a professional standpoint or just being someone to vent to when the stress of wedding planning becomes overwhelming. I deeply value connection and communication in my life and this has definitely translated into how I operate as a business owner.
