We were lucky to catch up with Hannah Huntley recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
Growing up, I was always singing something- while washing the dishes, in the shower, in the car… I just loved to sing! Around the age of 11 or 12 I started writing songs- they were my way of exploring my emotions using the melodies in my head. As long as I can remember, they’ve always just been there. I honestly always just KNEW I was going to be a musician, and I worked really hard to get here.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am in a Country Western Duo called Jericho Rose. I like to say Country Western because there’s definitely something within our sound and our vibe that evokes the spirit of the West- that’s where we’re from so it makes sense. My duo partner is my best friend James. We met out in California and started writing songs together and just sort of musically clicked. We’ve been here in Nashville chasing that crazy dream for 8 years- which is crazy to think about. This city has been really good to us- we are able to make a full time living as musicians which truly been a dream come true.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The way that social media has expanded has been absolutely crazy. There is so much pressure to cultivate a strong online presence these days. I definitely wish that we hopped on some of the trains earlier- mainly TikTok. Although it’s highly saturated, there’s still a lot of potential to connect with fans that discover you through the app!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
There is such a unique relationship between being a creative, but also treating it like a business. On one hand, you’re trying to be the most authentic and genuine version of yourself and your art and on the other hand you’re trying to utilize analytics of your content. You might put out a video that feels like a really cool representation of you, but maybe it doesn’t perform well. Or you share a bit of a new song and no one reacts the way you’d hoped. There is a delicate balance between analyzing and being aware of your numbers while still creating authentic pieces of your art. And learning to care about those numbers and let them guide you can be tricky!
