We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hannah Ghidey a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents always taught me to “go for what I want”. To be firm and always follow through. I am a triplet, and grew up to be known as the “triplet” until I turned 18 years of age. In case you’re wondering…. Two boys and a girl. I was always a curious child, and my goal at 10 years was to be a neurosurgeon. Eventually, I ventured off to college in Florida and pursued my career in Public Health focusing on childbirth, nutrition (“healthy lifestyle”), and woman’s health – as a Doula. My parents always trusted my instincts and began to see the transformation of their creation.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I always loved doing graffiti art and bubble letters. Eventually, when COVID-19 lockdown happened I was stuck in my hometown and bored with nothing to do. I eventually would just start free drawing and sketching cartoons I would watch and come to mind. I then started creating the Simpsons, Rick and Morty, and other anime characters I thought would look great together. I then ran into tufting. I always wanted to sell my art, but wanted something practical but also something people could look at and admire, and also use. I then got into rugs. I would go down to South Florida and take rug tufting classes once or twice a month and see the trial and errors of my own crafts, and eventually I had my own little studio at my home. I was always persistent and knew this was my calling. My first rug looked pretty damn good. If I had not continued, although I struggled many times, and was interested in making my craft better, I would not have seen the progression or been able to be so confident in my craft, and it will show. We’re all gonna make mistakes, we’re all going to not know how to do things, but being open and staying positive through that experience is what keeps us going, and you’ll also start to embrace those flaws. As I graduate with my B.S. Degree in Public Health and continue my certification as a Birth Doula, I will continue to educate others and help others achieve the best quality of life. Our mind and bodies are connected. I want to inspire, change, love, and spread kindness. It starts with ourselves and it starts while we are young. Our bodies are our temples, cherish them!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being social. Putting your brand or name out into the public. Letting people and other businesses know what you do and how we as individuals can connect each other’s thoughts to create a beautiful vision.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Doubting myself. Our biggest enemy is ourselves. I constantly am hard on myself. Give yourself grace – knowing that we all are human. To grow, we need to learn from what we’ve experienced to improve our outcomes.
