We were lucky to catch up with Hannah Crump recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
My business name is Sapphire Heart Photography. Maybe 6 years ago imposter syndrome kicked in HARD. I wasn’t sure if taking this photography path was the path for me. At that point, photography had been my hobby for 10 years and I felt at a stand still. I needed to take a little break and clear my head, so I change my instagram handle to something unrelated to photography or my actual name and it then became more a personal account. I came up with @sapphireheartt. Sapphire is my birthstone, I LOVE my birthstone! So I felt it was fitting to use! “Heart” was actually “HeArt” at first. I like little hidden messages and it meant “my heart is in my art.”
I know, it’s a little cheesy! I was young! But I meant it.
When I decided to work towards going full time as a wedding photographer about 4 years ago, I never changed my instagram handle. As I built new connections and worked really hard, it became my social online identity and what a lot of people referred me as. When I officially opened up my business full time, I just KNEW I needed to keep it. “Hannah Crump Photography” did not speak to my soul and couldn’t image that being my business’s name.
So thats how Sapphire Heart Photography came to be. My new handle is @sapphireheartphotography!
Art will always be in my heart no matter what and I put everything into my work, my clients, and my business. I make sure the work I take on is work I love and am passionate about because it’s important to me that my clients love what they receive back from me.
Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
HI! I’m Hannah!! I’m a full time photographer based in Georgia, specializing in local elopements, intimate weddings, engagements, couples, families, and maternity. My posing style is more untradtional, romantic and intimate, a little laid back, some movement but still some good traditional photos too!
I want to capture all those in-between moments and really document my clients connections to each other.
My editing style is a little moody and warm.
I picked up my first camera when I was 11. I immediately fell in love. It was a cheap little camera from Walmart, but I had all my friends doing “photoshoots” with me! I wish I could see those photos again today!
I went through lots of cameras over the years and figuring out what spoke to my heart!
In my amateur days, I started out doing a lot of portraits, just fun stuff. I did a few weddings here and there for experience also.
But it wasn’t until I became a mom that I realized just how important photos are. I have always LOVED taking them but realizing the volume that photos can speak really changed the game for me. Becoming a mom changed this perspective because I took for granted how short life can be. I cherished life more once I created it and the experience of that opened my heart and eyes. The days are long but the years are short and I don’t wanna miss a THING! This was when I became stronger as a photographer and worked to open my business full time.
Moments matter. Document them. I LIVE BY THIS! Get those family photos, your kids won’t be little forever. Make time for what you want on your wedding day, It’s your day! Document your pregnancy, I promise you will want to look back on it. These are my why’s. Why I do what I do!
I am all about helping my clients. Whatever they need, they know they can reach out to me and ask.
For sessions I help plan the location based on my clients personality and style. It should be unique to them. I plan the timing, I completely direct everything as-well.
For weddings, I make sure to ask a ton of questions. I wanna know everything!! It’s important for me to understand their vision. My wedding packages are completely customized so this means my clients are paying for only what they want. And then I create an organized photo timeline based solely on that! I stick to the timeline all day, as well as communicate with coordinators to keep us all on track and in the loop.
I’d say the biggest thing to remember when planning your wedding or even a session, communication is key!!!
I think that is something I am good at working through and solving with my clients. Communication and getting everyone on the same page will save you a headache.
I am proud of this business of mine. I don’t give up. And I think that’s what sets me apart. I’m an advocate for happiness, and I want to make sure I make my clients happy.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Referrals and recommendations! Social media, google profiles, and websites are all wonderful and important. But word of mouth is everything! People are more likely to book based on reviews from someone they trust.
What do you find most rewarding about being creative?
