We were lucky to catch up with Hannah Brencher recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hannah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I’m the founder of the company The World Needs More Love Letters. We’re a global community using the power of social media to handwrite and mail letters to people in need worldwide. I never intended for this to be my job or mission, but I grew up with a mother who wrote me love letters at all junctures of my life. When I graduated from college and moved to New York City, I found myself experiencing a lot of depression and loneliness. To cope, I wrote letters and would leave the letters around New York City.
I never imagined that a small act would become a global organization, but I took the mission that fueled– connecting with others through the power of words– and made a website. Through the website, people have the opportunity to read the stories of others and send in letters. The recipients of our Love Letter Bundles get anywhere from 200-500 letters showing up for them when they least expect it. It’s such a powerful movement, and it stemmed from one intentional act, which just proves we never know the full ripple effect of our actions.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Being the founder of More Love Letters propelled me into a creative career of writing books, producing online courses, and helping others build intentional lives through the power of habit and deliberate rhythms.
I write regularly at HannahBrencher.com.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I’ve had a unique journey building an online presence. From day one, I heard the constant advice that you needed to have a niche but I never felt like I fit into one niche or solved one single problem. I decided to show up online fully as myself and seek to be generous with social platforms. I live by the motto “Do for one what you wish you could for all.” That motto has changed so much of how I show up online. I think we forget that the most powerful social media has nothing to do with us– it has to do with the audience we are seeking to serve. I constantly ask myself: What do my readers need to hear? What do they need to know? How can I serve them better? By taking on a posture of service, I have watched our social platforms flourish and grow!

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I grew up thinking I was a bit of an oddball, wondering why I was so different from all the other kids. I realize now that that difference was always meant to be an edge. I spent years dulling it when I should have leaned fully into it and embraced it.
Now, as a fulltime writer and creative, I embrace the flow of creativity and let it lead me in my work. I realize now that this is my edge, and it is to my advantage that I can see the world around me differently than others.
