Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hannah Baylog. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Hannah thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
A lot has changed since I took the original risk going out on my own and starting my business, I have now started a family! Having a baby has been a big life change to say the least. I knew it would be but as a first-time mom, I wasn’t sure how it would affect my business or if I would even be able to continue. I’ve learned you don’t have to choose between your business and having a family, but the way you do your business may change. Along with having a baby I took another risk, we moved further away from most of my clients to live in a smaller town away from the hustle and bustle. Considering my original business plan was to be “Glam on Demand”, traveling to my clients at a whim, this has been a major change, but I am still able to do my clients and be a mommy. With these major life changes, I have made some changes to my business model. I have now set up a super cute in-home makeup room where clients can come to me and I can do their makeup, waxing and more as well as be with my toddler. I still travel to clients when I can and definitely still do for big events such as weddings. Even though I had to totally change my original plan of being the makeup girl on the go, I am happier than ever and I don’t regret the changes I have made to my business in order to have a family. My clients are just as loyal and I’m still doing what I love.
Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a makeup artist and licensed esthetician specializing in everyday glam as well as weddings and events. Some other popular beauty services I provide are eyebrow shaping, lash and brow tinting and private makeup lessons. I started my business after working at various spas and makeup salons doing clients and realizing I had a loyal clientele who would follow me and wanted me to do their beauty services regularly. I also started getting more wedding makeup referrals and have become a bridal makeup specialist. What sets me apart from other makeup artists is that I will not make you feel as though you are wearing a mask. Your skin will feel and look glowy and flawless, I love to enhance natural features. I think I’ve found the perfect balance between natural and glam looks. My clients know I will listen to what they want and achieve that for them. I also take pride in my eyebrow shaping skills. It’s amazing how eyebrows can shape faces and eyes. I use a sensitive skin wax that doesn’t require strips, and will not leave skin red. I have even done for brides on their wedding day, that’s how confident I am in this waxing service! I can travel to my clients but I also have an in-home makeup studio that’s so cute you’ll want to take selfies after you get beautified!
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media is a great tool to reach people/ show your work and you don’t have to have a million followers to do it. I don’t worry too much about getting a ton of followers and focus more on what I want people to see when they visit my page. I love that my clients can easily see my best and latest work while getting a feel for my style. I also try to show a variety of different clients and occasions, keeping up with the seasons and holidays. Also before and afters are a great way to show what you can do. At the bottom of my email, I have a link to my Instagram page so that they can follow and get inspiration for when they see me. I also have my website set up to automatically update and show my latest posts and they can click on the picture and it will bring them to the Instagram page.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Almost all of my new clients are referrals and my loyal clients have followed me for years so I must be doing something right! I think that being vigilant and consistent is very important. I want to give the same detailed and passionate service to every client every time. I treat every person with the same enthusiasm and listen to their wants and needs, this is so important to do since it is about them not me. I try to be flexible where I can be and to accommodate my clients as much as I can. Some other great advice is to always be on time, be honest and open, be happy and kind! If you are excited and happy about what you’re doing they will be, too.
