Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hannah Barry. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hannah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
Traditional women’s sleepwear never really felt like my style and it lacked basic functionality. It was too sheer to feel comfortable having coffee with my in-laws in, and too juvenile in its prints. As I began to spend more and more time in sleepwear during the pandemic, I wanted it to feel like an extension of my style versus a hard stop at bedtime.
I didn’t want to just create something stylish though – I wanted to solve real problems. The materials on Sedvana pieces are thick but breathable, so you can feel comfortable rolling out of bed and joining your family downstairs or taking the dog out without feeling the need to cover up. The pockets are deep enough to hold your phone, keys, snacks. The materials are all upcycled fabric that was making its way to a landfill and is now repurposed. You won’t have side-boob in our tank top, and you can sit on the floor and play with your kids in our shorts without fear of exposing everyone.
What I’m most proud of though is our imagery – it’s very intentional to show what women truly look like at bedtime. We shoot with natural hair and no makeup, and never photoshop our models.
Hannah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m Hannah, and I’m a native Coloradan, mom and owner of Sedvana. While I have a background in fashion, I don’t consider myself a fashion designer and would much rather think of Sedvana and myself as a problem-solver. Sedvana was created after years of trying to find sleepwear that was both timeless and functional, and feeling frustrated for needing to constantly choose between shapeless and sexy. Our styled shoots are make-up free and natural-hair focused, just like our customers at bedtime and our packaging and materials are all recycled, upcycled or biodegradable.
Everything about this line was designed with the utmost attention to detail and intention.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
In the beginning stages of building a brand, you cannot measure success solely on revenue. It’s hard, because it’s the first question many people will ask you – “How are sales?” when instead you would much rather talk about the hard work behind the scenes of getting the name out there, gifting strategically and finding the right partners. Success is a slow build, and not all businesses are booming overnight. Shifting that mindset for me has made a difference because I check all pillars of the brand to define success including product quality, innovation, sustainability, style and of course, revenue.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
I believe in hiring the best people and then being very hands off with them. I don’t believe I have all the right answers, and want a team that challenges me on what’s best for the brand. Ultimately, an empowered, trusted team does better work.
