Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hanna Huh. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hanna, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
My outlet as a teenager was browsing through fashion magazines. Shopping sprees were rare as the city I grew up didn’t have a mall, and fashion was how I expressed myself growing up. A few years ago, my husband and I had the opportunity to build a custom home. Selecting the hard finishes, blending colors and textures of the soft furnishings, and styling out the home brought me so much joy that I decided to purse interior decorating as a side business. My primary profession is as a pediatrician where performing a good history and communication are important. Those skills translate to working with design clients as it is crucial to perform a detailed design assessment and ensure the client and I are on the same page. I don’t believe there was anything that could have sped up the process, as learning is a lot of trial and error. But, I will say that listening to design experts and podcasts has helped me learn a great deal about processes and the industry. As a perfectionist, making mistakes can be tough, but mistakes honestly provide the best and most memorable lessons. Shifting my mindset to seeing both negative and positive experiences as learning opportunities has helped me give grace to myself.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a pediatrician by training who started an interior decorating business on the side. My husband and I built our custom home a few years ago, and through the process, I discovered my knack for spatial planning and for achieving balance with colors and textures. My style leans slightly feminine, and I gravitate towards clean lines but appreciate traditional elements. I enjoy playing with juxtaposition – mixing vintage with modern, feminine with masculine, cool with warm, smooth with textured. Home is a safe haven, and my goals for design are for my client’s homes to bring peace and to serve as a place for making memories.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
There is nothing like word of mouth that brings new clients. There is an implicit trust that is unmatched.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
In my primary job, I operate with my left brain a lot. There is a different type of enjoyment and satisfaction that comes when I finish a design board or see a project come to life. And even more so, being able to share that finished product with others so that they can enjoy it is very rewarding. Seeing their eyes light up makes me feel so proud.
