We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hanna Denham a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Hanna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Art in Flexion was named with the idea of bringing an anatomical aspect to the artistic industry.
We are Artists and we are in Flexion.
Creatives in motion.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Art in Flexion is a strength and flexibility based circus school. We specialize in teaching our students about their bodies. Our main focus is overall health of the muscular system. Although we do prepare for performance and circus skills we believe every person can benefit from strength training. Also deepening their relationship with themselves in this process.
We teach our students about anatomy and muscle function. We then personalize a training regimen toward their weakness or pain they may be unable to progress without addressing. When it comes to the difficulties of daily life we often fall behind in properly caring for our posture.
When it comes to circus skills strength training is key. We have students from age 12-60 that have achieved amazing feats with understanding not just application.
We teach anywhere from basic strength classes to handstand and contortion classes.
Most of our students decide to perform their achievements and skills in our shows. Although through covid we Re designed our live show model. We have been creating short films where each student designs their own music video. We show our films in parks on large projector screens! Though this fall we will be premiering at The Lot in Liberty Station.
Art in Flexion’s vision is to spread the news that every body is capable of amazing things. Gaining more understanding of the human body and how muscles and joints work together open a new field of possibility.
We are proud of our students and all they have achieved. Age is just a number and anyone can have the splits!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Hanna Denham is the owner of Art in Flexion. She is a hand balancing contortionist. She struggled greatly in circus training with injuries in her young years. While being so distraught and saddened to find these were so common in her field. This led her to deepen her knowledge of how to prevent these issues. She became a Personal Trainer and Group Fitness instructor along her journey and studied under massage therapists and kinesiologists. She has an incredible amount of respect for her mentors and their eagerness to share their knowledge. Hanna was able to take these learnings and apply them to her training to prevent injuries in her field. She went on to perform longer than most in her age group. In fact she still performs now in her 30’s. Her students benefit greatly from her teachings. Hanna’s goals will always be to keep her students healthy and moving forward.
Have you ever had to pivot?
When Art in Flexion was slowed due to covid we were mostly concerned for our students. We put so much emphasis toward creativity and making outlets for our students to perform. We had been doing live shows for years and thriving. We believe creative expression is a gateway to fulfillment not just for the individual but for our audience. We decided we needed to dig deeper into options on how to continue.
This is when we began to explore the options of film. Each student would take their skills and apply them to a new platform. We designed sets, sound, and imagery to re create our live shows. This opened a new platform for us to explore. We began to show our films on huge projector screens outdoors during covid years. The response was magnificent. We continued to inspire and showcase magic! We have now made 3 movies and are in production again! Our next film will be in a real movie theater this fall!
