Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hanna Boatwright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hanna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
First, I think you need to define what success means for you. If you try to follow someone else’s definition of success, you may end up somewhere you don’t necessarily want to be. For me, success is creating meaningful work and being excited about the projects I have lined up. If I feel fulfilled and am excited about what I am doing; I feel successful. An independent spirit and a bravery to follow it will land you exactly where you want to be.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My orientation to time has always been the past. I’m nostalgic for just about everything. I long for past moments in a heavy and at times all consuming way. Photography started for me when I realized I wanted to hold onto every moment. It’s therapeutic for me truthfully. It makes no difference whether I’m photographing something personal to me or for a client, I’m just here to document. To keep the fleeting moments zooming around us safe and here with us. It’s my favorite thing to do. I do feel like my attention to detail and my emotional connection to what I am producing comes across in my work. At least that is the goal.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
My mission driving my creative journey to create authentic and self fulfilling work. Work that brings me closer to myself and the world around me.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I think my biggest pivot in life was dropping out of college and choosing to travel to Maui for an unknown period of time. It felt reckless at the time. I got a lot of crap for doing it because it didn’t make sense to the people around me. A lot of people saw it as running away, and maybe it was. I needed to do something by myself and for myself and it ended up being my favorite experience of my life thus far. I stayed there for like 9 weeks I think and lived and worked on a farm in exchange for a room (renovated ice cream truck) and food. My only regret is that I didn’t stay longer, but I ran out of money!
