We recently connected with Hank Schyma and have shared our conversation below.
Hank, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Some of the most interesting parts of our journey emerge from areas where we believe something that most people in our industry do not – do you have something like that?
Most successful content creators on YouTube I stumble across appear to do well at following the latest trends in production and wrangling followers. YouTube analysts have recommended heavy CTA’s (Call To Actions) uploading often and regularly, with consistent themes. I adhere to none of these.

Hank, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Howdy, I’m a musician, videographer, snake wrangling adventurer, but I suppose I’ve made the biggest splash with my tornado and lightning videos posted on YouTube. Ultimately, I want viewers to experience these magnificent storms, weird wild animals and what not as if they were actually there. It would be so much more productive and time sensible if I used canned music for my productions, but I suppose since I’ve been a lifelong musician, I’m stubborn about scoring each video myself. It’s a mountain of work, but a lot of fun.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A huge lesson I had to unlearn is a bit of a controversial one, but you asked. You only live once and an afterlife in the clouds is highly unlikely. Do not squander your brief stay here waiting for Zeus or whoever to lay it all out for you. Carpe diem! but with attention and preparations for the future.
Do you sell on your site, or do you use a platform like Amazon, Etsy, Cratejoy, etc?
Dan Workman, a music producer & clinical psychiatrist I worked with for a couple decades taught me early the value of micro-royalties. Having dozens of little revenue streams can really add up. Song downloads, royalties, stream royalties, T-shirt sales, tip jars, patrons, stocks, dividends, compound interest etc. in aggregate have made my work and life possible. PS, thanks Patrons!
