We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hank Ebeling a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hank, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory of how you established your own practice.
I knew I wanted to own my own fitness facility back in high school when I would spend hours designing my logo in graphic design class. At the time my vision was a sports performance gym which later would end up changing over time. My goal after graduating college became to follow the steps that were needed for me to be able to gain the finances and knowledge necessary to open my own facility one day. I would spend time attending seminars, taking courses, and getting real-world experience in the fitness field to increase my chances for future success. Once I got to the point in which I had a date in mind to actually open a gym I took action. The biggest challenge early on in the process was finding the right location. I missed out on my first 3 locations before finding the one I am in today. By biggest advice for anyone wanting to start their own business is to focus on the areas besides your technical knowledge in your field. Meaning study business, marketing, and sales. Go find someone who is a few steps ahead of you and see what they did and are doing. That is what you will need for success!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am the owner and founder of multiple small group training gyms called H4 Training. I have always had a passion for fitness and self-improvement via exercise from my early years as an athlete. After working many years in high-end gyms I knew I wanted to create a clean, high-end training facility with a focus on service. One of the things I am most proud of is the culture and team I have created across our multiple locations.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being client-centric hands down. By putting our clients first and delivering outstanding service we have been able to create buzz and get referrals without having to spend hardly any money on advertising.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
