Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Han xiang Xu. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Han xiang, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
One of the most significant projects I’ve spearheaded in Vancouver was an intimate salon concert series. While not a commercial triumph, it holds unparalleled personal significance. My vocation as a classical pianist predominantly resonates with a niche audience, yet my passion for this genre drives my desire to share its beauty more broadly. Performing globally in grand concert halls has been fulfilling, but these smaller, more personal concerts have forged a deeper connection with my audience. In these settings, I had the opportunity to elucidate the nuances of each piece, sharing my affection for the music and highlighting elements for the audience to anticipate.
The series mandated a formal dress code, adding an air of elegance to the evenings and allowing attendees to revel in the sophistication of the arts. The serene tableau of an engaged audience, attired in their finest, absorbing the music, was a testament to the transcendent nature of these gatherings. This format, I believe, epitomizes the ideal consumption of classical music, particularly for certain compositions.
Regrettably, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic necessitated the cessation of this series. Nevertheless, the insights gleaned from this venture have been instrumental in my latest collaboration with wine connoisseur Dr. Clinton Lee. This new endeavor aims to blend various high-cultural elements, encompassing wine, whisky, cigars, classical music, art, fashion, and jewelry, creating a multifaceted cultural experience.
Han xiang, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Steinway Artist Han Xiang David Xu stands as a luminary in the world of classical music, drawing comparisons to the legendary Arthur Rubinstein for his exquisite Chopin interpretations. His recent concert with the Lagom Philharmonic Orchestra in Vancouver, featuring Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, has solidified his status as a compelling force on the international stage.
Xu’s recordings have garnered acclaim, with his ‘Sonatas on Canvas’ winning Global Music Awards in multiple categories. His latest album, ‘Unattainable Illusion,’ masterfully explores pieces by Ravel, Takematsu, and Chopin, showcasing his versatility and depth.
At the helm of the Lagom Music Society as Executive Director, Xu shapes the musical narrative, complementing his award-winning presence on the global competition circuit, with accolades from Rome to Paris.
Educated at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music, Xu’s academic endeavors probe the synergy between Taichi principles and piano performance, an innovative approach that he also imparts as an esteemed educator and adjudicator.
Xu’s artistry transcends music, with his presence gracing a 2019 Jaguar XFL sedan advertisement, illustrating the harmonious blend of elegance between his musicianship and the commercial realm.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist lies in the profound connections I forge with my audiences. The opportunity to share my interpretation of the classical repertoire and to witness listeners’ emotional journeys during a performance is immensely gratifying. It is not simply about playing music; it’s about creating a shared experience that transcends cultural and linguistic boundaries, uniting us in a moment of artistic communion.
The intimate communication that occurs in smaller, personal venues, where I can engage directly with my audience, is particularly special. Here, I can reveal the stories behind the compositions, delve into the subtleties of each piece, and perhaps, see a reflection of my passion for the music in the eyes of those listening.
Receiving recognition for my work—be it through awards or through comparisons to great pianists like Arthur Rubinstein—adds to the sense of achievement. Yet, more than that, it’s the ability to contribute to the cultural tapestry through my performances and my role at the Lagom Music Society that I find truly fulfilling.
And beyond the stage and the applause, imparting my knowledge and love for music to aspiring pianists, and seeing them grow under my tutelage, completes the circle. It’s a testament to the power of music and its ability to inspire, transform, and enrich lives—including my own.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
From my vantage point as a classical pianist who has treaded the global stage, I believe non-creatives may not fully grasp the sheer dedication and rigorous discipline the craft demands. Beyond the glamour of concert performances and the accolades of a Steinway Artist, lies a reality steeped in countless solitary hours in the practice room, where the joy of music often gives way to the monotony of perfecting just a handful of notes. This discipline is the backbone of our artistic expression, yet it is invisible to the audience.
The life of a pianist, contrary to popular belief, is not a constant stream of joy and public adulation. The bulk of our journey is silent, painstaking work that takes place behind the scenes. It’s a test of mental and physical endurance, resilience, and unwavering passion.
Furthermore, the classical music sphere is not immune to superficial judgments. Musicians, myself included, are often critiqued not just for our performances but for how we present ourselves to the world. The expectation of a classical pianist’s lifestyle can be a restrictive stereotype. If one indulges in luxury or deviates from the traditional image, there’s a risk of being perceived as less dedicated to the craft. However, my belief is that an artist’s personal style or lifestyle choices should not eclipse their professional dedication or the quality of their artistry.
Art is a reflection of life, and as artists, we live through our music. The depth of our performances is shaped by a broad spectrum of experiences. My journey, informed by a diverse interest in martial arts, ballet, and painting, and even my involvement in a commercial advertisement, underscores that creativity is not a monolith. It is multi-dimensional and enriched by an array of influences, both austere and affluent.
I hope this insight can illuminate the often unseen complexities of a creative’s journey, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the discipline and breadth of experiences that shape an artist’s path.
