We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Han-Wei Hsing. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Han-Wei below.
Hi Han-Wei, thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I started to make music when I was in high school. With a musical background in piano and drums, making music was interesting and not as hard as I thought. I quickly found the passion. When I am making music, I find myself forgetting everything. I am only focusing on the music and I love the moment, Since then, I never stopped making music. When I published my first song on SoundCloud, I decided to take this path professionally.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I stopped publishing my music around my junior year of college. I found better things to do. Instead of making my own music, I enjoyed making music for other artists. That’s my job right now, as a music producer and an audio engineer. I record songs, write songs, make beats, and provide mixing and mastering for other artists. I have my own studio in Shanghai and artists come to me in person or online. My clients need me because they are not happy with their songs and need to upgrade the quality technically and musically. I solved their problems and they found it worth it to collaborate with me. A lot of artists make their music at home with minimal audio gear and YouTube instrumentals. They get to a point where they found out their music is just not good enough to reach the next level. They need better gear for recording their vocals, a better engineer to mix their vocals and the whole song, and also a producer to level up their music. I provide all these services.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Seeing my work being published is very important. It means I am getting credit, more and more of them. It is the best driving force of my journey till now. I started this career two years ago and reached a hundred million streams online (all my work for different artists combined). That means I have worked on many songs as a producer. Seeing myself growing more and being reached out by bigger artists is the best goal to accomplish.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wished I socialized more before I even started my career, even though I have only just started. Socializing with people is extremely important, especially in the music industry. The five years of college and master’s in the US, with covid and all that really have brought me down. I stayed home most of the time and met nobody for years. When I got back to Shanghai, I joined my friends’ business called Undergr00ves, which is a booking agency company that hosts live shows and concerts. This is a great resource/platform for me to connect with more artists. I would without Undergr00ves, I couldn’t even start my freelancing career.
