We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Hamlet Hayrapetyan. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Hamlet below.
Hamlet, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about how you learned to do what you do?
Photography involves working with lighting and Shadows, and since I have a background as a 3D visualizer, this made it easier for me to start taking photos and to ‘SEE’ the light through my camera lens.
Hamlet, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Hamlet, and whenever I introduce myself, I can’t help but notice the surprise on people’s faces. Almost everyone has heard the name, but few realize it’s still in use today. In my homeland of Armenia, however, it’s not just common—it’s a trend.
A pivotal moment in my life came in 2000 when my dad brought home a personal computer. It opened up an entirely new world for me, one I was eager to explore. I was particularly captivated by 3D graphics. I stumbled upon a CD with 3D editing software, installed it, and began teaching myself. Back then, there were no tutorials, no YouTube, not even internet access, so I had to rely on books and a lot of experimentation.
While studying at an institute of technology, I knew exactly what I would pursue after completing my mandatory two years of military service. True to my plan, I became a 3D visualizer. Eventually, I co-founded a small company with a friend, offering 3D visualization services. Over time, I gravitated towards motion graphics and 2D animation, drawn by the faster turnaround and the ever-present demand from clients for quicker results.
As my work evolved, it began to involve video shoots, which led me to discover photography. My background in 3D and motion graphics gave me a solid grasp of the technical aspects, allowing me to dive deeper into the creative side of photography. I quickly fell in love with it—the instant gratification of capturing a moment was even more satisfying than the relatively quicker results of motion graphics.
Photography has become a cherished hobby for me. I relish every part of the process, from the moment I step outside to capture shots, to the hours spent editing them, and finally sharing them on social media. While I do it primarily for my own enjoyment, I appreciate the feedback and recognition from others.
These days, I focus mainly on street photography. My work often requires travel, so I take my camera with me wherever I go, seizing every opportunity to explore new cities and capture their essence through my lens.
I love revisiting my photos now and then, each one is like a portal to a memory. Some are favorites, but I like to think that my best shots are still out there, waiting to be captured.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is the realization that even if the effort doesn’t come with a paycheck, the passion, and satisfaction I find in the process are more than enough. It’s about the joy of creating and knowing that, no matter the outcome, I never regret the time and energy I’ve poured into something I truly love.
Have you ever had to pivot?
A turning point in my life was when I made the leap from my homeland to the USA. Back home, I had carved out a successful career, holding a top position with strong connections, but life threw some curveballs that led me to this new chapter. Moving to a new country felt like hitting the reset button—starting over from square one. Despite the uncertainty, I was determined to continue my journey as a Motion Designer and Animator. Looking back, I’m thrilled I took that chance.
