We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hamid Saeidi a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hamid, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The Opium Moon band is profoundly meaningful to me. Comprised of four individuals from diverse backgrounds—Iran, Israel, the United States, and Canada—our collective experiences represent Muslim, Jewish, and Christian upbringings. Working together, crafting music, we offer a powerful testament to tolerance and understanding in today’s world. Our collaboration exemplifies the beauty of unity despite our differences, showcasing the transformative power of music in fostering harmony among varied cultures and beliefs.

Hamid, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
As a composer, producer, and santur artist from Iran, my journey in the U.S. spans 15 years, marked by the inception of Opium Moon Band about 8 years ago. Remarkably, our debut album earned a Grammy, while our second album garnered an Academy nomination. Our latest album released on September 2023, “Where We Are Gathered,” holds the dearest place in our hearts. This album signifies a profound closeness, born during the tumultuous era of COVID-19, when physical distance separated us, yet our hearts remained intertwined.
The title of this album encapsulates the essence of our bond—a time when our thoughts and emotions converged, transcending physical barriers. It’s a testament to how we gather, irrespective of physical proximity, as our hearts unite in musical harmony, embodying the essence of togetherness despite the challenges that keep us apart.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Absolutely, for musicians and performers, the traditional concept of a tangible product is scarce. Their art lives and breathes in their performances, making support from society pivotal. In a landscape where physical albums have diminished, platforms like social media, YouTube, and other streaming services become the avenues for showcasing and promoting their art.
Attending independent artists’ shows and boosting their presence online isn’t just a choice; it’s a crucial lifeline. Without this support, artists would struggle to sustain their creative endeavors. Society’s backing through attendance, engagement, and active promotion not only ensures their survival but also empowers them to continue creating the music that enriches our lives.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As an artist, the most fulfilling reward comes from forging connections with people and witnessing their delight as they immerse themselves in the joy of music. Creating an atmosphere where people experience moments of pure delight, positive thoughts, and wonderful experiences is what resonates deeply with me.
Whether I’m performing for an audience or teaching my students, these moments encapsulate the beauty of my craft. Knowing that music serves as a healing balm for our souls, nurturing us and facilitating personal growth, brings immense fulfillment. It’s in these instances that I believe music has the power to transform, making us better individuals and nurturing our spirits in profound ways.
