We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hallie Rosenthal a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Hallie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
Realizing that I was meant to play a supporting role to an entrepreneur or a visionary was the most innovative career move I’ve made. I’m a forward thinker and a leader, and my skills are best utilized helping true creatives make their initiatives and dreams come to fruition. I’m an analytical, systems driven thinker and implementer and I thrive in creating order and executing steps to get to a company goal. One of my strong points is getting my team and essentially all cylinders firing in a tactical way that continues to move the needle forward.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in Bloomfield Hills, MI and graduated from the University of Michigan. My career started as a buyer for Bloomingdales in New York City and then I transitioned to helping run the family Logistics business for seven years. Most recently I spent 14 years managing the Operations and Buying at Rapunzel’s Closet in Palm Beach. After living in New York City and Bergen County, NJ for over 15 years, I relocated permanently in 2019 to my family’s second home — Palm Beach, FL.
I started my Instagram Influencer career and website Hallie Says as a hobby that stemmed from my love of dining out, shopping and cooking for my family. I provide food, fashion, and entertaining pro-tips to help you live an attainable and effortless lifestyle. I’ve worked with numerous national brands like Lilly Pulitzer, Eggland’s Best and Dunkin’ Donuts. I love collaborating with brands and sharing products that are interesting to my audience. Recently I’ve been using my platform to talk about the career pivot that I experienced at age 45 and how I had to overcome imposter syndrome in order to really branch out and find the next chapter in my career.
I also created a community networking group for influencers and entrepreneurs with two other local professionals called Let’s Get Social Palm Beach. This group was born from a love of connecting people together for mutually beneficial collaboration. With over 100 members residing in Orlando to Miami, Let’s Get Social PB puts on quarterly educational and cultural events around Palm Beach County.
As an employee and a business owner, I am known for my authenticity, kindness and detail-oriented nature. It is these traits that ultimately brought me into the Meyer Lucas Team (www.meyerlucas.com) as the Chief of Staff where I work directly with agents and clients to build connections and ensure a positive customer service experience every step of the way.
This new role has been so eye-opening and has truly defined my career path in a way that I never saw it going. It shed light on the importance of the #2 within an organization, and has allowed me to really lean into highlighting and educating others about this role for women in a similar position. It’s a true dream job with an “I have your back understanding” where I work in tandem with my team leader, Holly Meyer Lucas in a “check your ego at the door” culture. We work together in a highly functional environment that allows us to continue to move the needle forward for the award winning real estate empire she’s built from the ground up.
In my spare time, I love to spend time with my son Ryder, who is my biggest accomplishment to date. I also love entertaining friends and family, dining out and of course taking pictures of food and fashion!
Have you ever had to pivot?
It’s not easy – and you did it. One of my best friends for over 30 years said this to me during our long overdue telephone date. Being that she’s an expert in career placement her words resonated with me.
I spent 14+ years in a career in fashion and retail operations but when my career ended I honestly felt like I knew absolutely nothing. Every job description I read felt foreign to me. I doubted whether my skills were actually transferable. Imposter syndrome is a real thing and I had the worst case of it.
HOWEVER… instead of dwelling on what I was worried about not knowing – I focused on what I knew I was good at:
1️⃣ I networked my a$$ off. I reconnected with people that I had met along the way in my career.
2️⃣ I helped people out of the kindness of my heart – never with my hand out. If a friend needed an odd job or help with a project – I was Hallie on the spot. I gave my time and put my best foot forward every.single.time.
3️⃣ I connected other people for mutually beneficial collaborations knowing that eventually my time would come and someone would pay it forward.
Then my time came, and someone paid it forward and it wasn’t easy to get where I am today, but it can be done and I did it!
And guess what – you can do it too. Whether you are looking to change careers, go back to work after being at home or you’ve recently lost your job – this system works. Network, donate your time, help others, BE KIND.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I was born to manage teams and my best advice is to be a part of the team and treat everyone equal. Don’t foster friendships with team members that might ultimately cloud your judgement with decision making. If you are a manager – maintain a management role at all times. Don’t ask your team to do things that you haven’t done in your career. Get down and dirty with them to build trust and work ethic. Be kind always.
