We recently connected with Hallie Endresen and Hailey Grillo and have shared our conversation below.
Hallie Endresen, Hailey Grillo, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
We started our brand while we were still in high school, living with our parents. We needed a place to store all of this amazing vintage clothing we were finding, and the shed in Hailey’s backyard had some storage room for us to use. Hailey had a couch in there and a television, she would hangout with her friends in there in early high school like a little clubhouse. It ended up becoming like a miniature warehouse for all of our vintage inventory. We thought of the name Shedhead because we started out in a little shed!

Hallie Endresen, Hailey Grillo, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Shedhead Vintage is a vintage clothing store based in Red Bank, NJ. We sell vintage clothing from the 1960’s – late 1990’s for all genders, sizes and styles. We keep our vintage at an affordable price range in order to keep amazing vintage clothing accessible to everyone. The way we source our vintage is really unique, and benefits our local community. We created a system of buying appointments, mainly with older folks in our community who are looking to downsize their clothing collection. They have the option to bring their old clothing to our shop, or we can come to their home. We purchase their unwanted clothing in cash, curating their closet selection for our customers. It’s so much fun for us to dig through attics and basements to find vintage treasures our customers will love, while also benefitting the people we purchase the clothing from.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
We have known each other since elementary school and always had mutual friends but we never truly became friends until we were the only girls in our gym class in our junior year of high school. We instantly bonded over our love of vintage clothing and environmental sustainability. We both loved to go thrifting and boycott big fast fashion brands. We didn’t even really hangout together doing normal teenage things before we started our business, our business is basically what made us best friends! We started thrifting and curating specifically vintage clothing and reselling them on Depop as a hobby at first, but we realized we could actually make some money from doing this. Now seven years later, we’re not thrifting for our inventory anymore, but doing local buying appointments.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
When we opened our first brick and mortar shop in 2021 we instantly felt that our local community was lacking a shop exactly like ours. We quickly got a look into what our clientele would look like and what our role in the vintage market was. The main ways we built our reputation was through carrying a wide variety of aesthetics, offering affordable prices, and creating a fun, inclusive atmosphere for vintage lovers to enjoy. Also, our unique sourcing tactics helped us establish our reputation by offering a service for local people in our community.
