Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Hali Hicks. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hali, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Have you been able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen? Was it like that from day one? If not, what were some of the major steps and milestones and do you think you could have sped up the process somehow knowing what you know now?
I have always been a singer. My family also plays and sings so they were very supportive when I said I wanted to move to Nashville at 17 years old. My daddy gave me $100 and a tank of gas and I drove to Nashville. I worked as a hostess at Applebee’s for a few weeks then was offered a gig at a bar in Nashville by a man I had met from years of visiting Nashville and sitting in with the bands around town. Since then I have made my living playing music.
Hali, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My family sings and plays gospel and bluegrass music. I’ve been around music my entire life so it was no surprise to my family when I decided to move to Nashville. I have been making my living playing music since I was 17 years old.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is that I get to make people smile just by taking a few minutes to pick up a guitar and sing them a song. I also love how rewarding it is to be able to sit alone with just my guitar and write words and melody straight from my heart whether happy or sad, it is a very therapeutic thing for me.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
To me it seems there is a natural drive within me to continue in music. I enjoy what I do for a living. Not everyone can say that. I am a wife and mother to 3 (and 1 on the way). My husband is also in music and while most people may say or think you can’t be musicians anymore after starting a family we’ve never felt that way and we have always just continued doing what we love! As long as God continues to bless that route, we will continue to stay on it.
