We recently connected with Haley Shabankar and have shared our conversation below.
Haley , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
Learning the ins and outs of interior design comes with a whole set of standards, do’s and don’ts, but mostly it comes enate and some things just cannot be taught. A true designer not only has “the eye”, but also understands the importance of how an individual lives and the comforts and complexities that surround it. The skills I have learned throughout my career that have been most valuable to me are how to key in to exactly what my client’s needs are translating into their vision. Sometimes clients may not be able to articulate the whys and whats, but as a designers, it’s our job to pick apart certain clues and aspects of their vision and create a cohesive, functional and beautiful space.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding and gratifying aspect of being an Interior Designer is seeing the finished outcome on a project and knowing my ideas and designs will positively impact the quality of lives for the people living in them. Whether it’s selecting materials that not only look beautiful but wear well, a functioning kitchen that a foodie/chef can cook up amazing meals for their families in with ease or a beautiful and comfortable living or bedroom space that feels like your own personal sanctuary, it undoubtedly makes my heart happy.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
One of the biggest resources in my creative journey has been networking with other professional within or outside of the design realm. Throughout my creative journey, I’ve learned how important and necessary it is to have a strong community around you that can help offer advice, support and creative ideas on how to be a better business owner or designer. I joined a networking group about a year in after I started my business and it really helped to accelerate my growth and get my name out there.
