We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Haley Martin. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Haley below.
Haley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The inspiration behind naming my business Azucar Desserts stemmed from my deep affection for Hispanic treats, particularly tres leches and milhojas. Recognizing that sugar, or ‘Azucar’ in Spanish, is an essential ingredient in all my creations, I found it to be the ideal name for my venture.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been baking since I was 15, but it’s really been the last three years where I’ve hit my stride. I felt like I had something special to offer, you know? I’m all about trying out crazy flavor combos, using fancy ingredients, and making each bake look like a work of art. Food is such a big part of every culture and brings people together, and that’s what I’m all about. I just want my desserts to make people’s best moments even sweeter!

Have you ever had to pivot?
You know what’s funny? Right now, I’m in the middle of this huge life shift. A few months back, when I picked my master’s program in Food Technology, I also decided to dive into the food industry. A friend told me I had to get out of the office and into the thick of things. So, when I got laid off recently I swapped my desk job for waiting tables. I’m soaking up all I can about how restaurants really work—I’ve got big dreams of opening one someday. Meanwhile, my baking business is picking up speed, and I’m hustling to build better connections for my biz.

Alright – let’s talk about marketing or sales – do you have any fun stories about a risk you’ve taken or something else exciting on the sales and marketing side?
I recently set up shop at this event that turned out to be a mix of Hotwheels and diecast stuff alongside wrestling. I was pumped about it because it was in Orlando and stretched over a few days. But man, it didn’t turn out as I expected. I swear I kept seeing the same 7 folks circling the place, and I barely made enough to cover my costs. Turns out, it wasn’t just me; other vendors were in the same boat. The event wasn’t well organized or promoted, which was a bummer.
But hey, it wasn’t all bad. I connected with some awesome vendors, and my son had a blast. Most importantly, I learned to do better research next time. Checking out event photos from previous years, social media attendance, and page likes could have saved me the trouble. Risk is part of the game, but I’m grateful I learned this lesson early on.
