We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Haley Bastin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Haley, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think you parents did right?
Growing up, I was fortunate to have parents who ingrained the importance of service into me at a very young age. If a family member, friend, neighbor, or even a stranger was in need, my parents would step in to help if they could. My family was always active, whether it was at my mom’s social work events, local church gatherings, or community activities. This became second nature for me to want to help and uplift others throughout my lifetime. I firmly believe that many people aspire to do great things in the world. If we continue to connect, bridge gaps, and serve others, we can achieve these goals much faster and more effectively than trying to do so alone.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
Indeed, there are numerous resources that have profoundly influenced my entrepreneurial and managerial mindset. A few notable books that have guided my journey include ‘Personality Plus’, ‘Crucial Conversations’, ’10 Critical Laws of Relationships’, ‘Think Like a Monk’, ‘Do it Afraid’, ‘Rocket Fuel’, and ‘Automate Your Busywork’. Each of these works has provided me with invaluable insights and strategies, shaping my approach to leadership, communication, and business growth. Additionally, faithfully listening to Myron Golden’s Youtube Channel and attending his in person sessions have been exponentially beneficial to my success.

Do you have any insights you can share related to maintaining high team morale?
With a background in staffing and recruitment, I’ve dedicated my corporate career to sourcing and retaining exceptional talent for major corporations. My best advice for managing a team is to truly understand each team member as an individual and adapt your communication style to best suit them. The book ‘Personality Plus’ can provide valuable insights into understanding different personality types and how to communicate effectively with each one, along with helping you understand YOUR personality type.
Leadership demands a flexible approach, and I am a firm believer that this adaptability is a cornerstone in the construction of a successful and dynamic team. Moreover, it’s essential to extend your understanding beyond their personality type and genuinely invest in their personal lives. A quote that has profoundly influenced my leadership style is, “People do not care about what you know, until they know how much you care.” It’s vital to acknowledge that while business models are system-driven, people are not. A one-size-fits-all approach is ineffective when dealing with diverse individuals. When you genuinely care for your team and pour into them they can provide an overflow into you.
Furthermore, as a leader, I’ve recognized the significance of assisting my team in not only identifying their strengths and weaknesses but also help cultivate them. It’s my duty to strategically place them where they can thrive. If I discern that a team member’s strength could be more effectively employed in a different role, I am receptive to adjusting their position. This strategy not only benefits the individual but also enhances the overall performance of the team. Learning when to pivot and when to stay in position is key!
