We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Haili McCance a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Haili, thanks for joining us today. Let’s start with the decision of whether to donate a percentage of sales to an organization or cause – we’d love to hear the backstory of how you thought through this.
I take a percentage off my prices for causes close to my heart as well as donate my time to a few important causes. I donate my time to photographing adoptions of kiddos coming out of foster care through together we rise. I also donate my services to a few local first responder causes. My husband is a first responder, so I know first hand the sacrifice that first responders and their families give for the community. I’m happy to offer my services back to them. I also offer scholarships for families who have kiddos with special needs. My professional background is with in home therapy for kiddos with autism so I want to make sure every family has someone to capture their family’s memories. A big part of my business has become getting to help support causes I care about which is so much more than I could have hoped for.
Haili, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
As cheesy as it sounds, I want folks to know that I truly care. I care that your family is portrayed authentically. I care that important causes are well represented. I care about the quality of my craft. I care that my services are a professional quality at an affordable cost. I care that families with difficult schedules can be accommodated. I care that families with special needs can have a custom tailored session to help them thrive. I also care that you have an enjoyable time taking photos with me. Family photos can be stressful and they don’t have to be!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I think the most rewarding part of my business is bringing joy to families. The fact that I get to support my family financially while having a creative outlet is really a dream come true.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My husband was almost killed while on duty in 2021. His recovery took over a year and he still has many medical issues because of it. I was seven months pregnant at the time. My business very quickly went from thriving to on hold. Owning my own business allowed me to do that. When our life calmed down, I was able to resume at a pace that was best for my family and I. Because I had cultivated such wonderful relationships with my clients, they were all ready and waiting for me when I opened back up. I’m incredibly grateful to consider so many of them friends.
