We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hailey Weiss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Hailey, thanks for joining us today. So, one thing many business owners consider is donating a percentage of sales or profits to an organization or cause. We’d love to hear your thoughts and the story behind how and why you chose the cause or organization you donate to.
I had my business do a Power Move Women in Business Search in which we interviewed women to give a grant for $5,000 for them to use towards their business! We ended up choosing Angel Baby which creates tools and resources for young children’s development!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Hailey Brooke Weiss and I am the owner and founder of Power Move Marketing. I graduated from The Wake Forest School of Business, where I received a Masters of Science in Management after completing my Bachelors of Arts in Communication with a Minor in Film and Media Aesthetics. I started Power Move Marketing because after playing four years of D1 volleyball, I needed a way to continue to be competitive. I had already begun private consulting for several companies while still in graduate school and had found a lot of success with it. Some of my clients suggested that I begin my own marketing company since I had outperformed their previous marketing companies. Seeing how I could make a real positive impact on my clients made me realize that I wanted to continue helping companies reach their full potential, even after graduate school. I am excited at the opportunity to continue to help companies grow and achieve their dreams to the fullest extent. We have been in the Wall Street Journal and two of our clients have been on Shark Tank!
Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
I had begun running the marketing campaigns for several businesses while in graduate school. I really wanted to support myself so I was also walking dogs, announcing volleyball for ESPN, and driving people’s kids to and from school in between 16-20 hrs of classes! I started to build on my business acumen and by the time I graduated, was already making about $17k/mo and decided to begin hiring! Now we have 8 full-time employees, 5 part-time employees and growing!
Any advice for managing a team?
We have grown really fast in the past two years. We have made a lot of amazing hires and have really built what I like to think of being the marketing dream team.
I personally advise you to always be as transparent as possible with the team. Make sure they understand how their role and paycheck can grow.
Make sure you are always giving credit to others as well as publicly acknowledging incredible performance. Make sure your team knows they are valuable.
Do not expect others to love your business in the same way you do and also never expect others to do something for your business that you would not do yourself!
