We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Hailey Licht a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hailey, appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a customer success story with us?
I started my safety keychain business after being harassed attending college late at night. I remember feeling so afraid to walk back to my car after class in fear of something happening to me. I went to go buy myself some sort of safety item to have with me, but I couldn’t really find anything that was cute and also affordable. A year later, I was able to save up enough money to start my own safety keychain business and it truly changed my life. One of the best parts of my business is hearing customer success stories. This one customer in particular told me that my safety keychain saved their life. They told me that they were walking home from work late at night when they were approached by somebody following them. They were able to use their safety alarm to deter the assailant. After doing my business for the last three years, I’ve been able to help thousands of customers with safety and I truly feel so blessed doing this! Hearing customer success stories like this one is the reason I started this business in the first place.
Hailey, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Hailey and I started my safety keychain business in college! The goal and the mission of my business is to promote safety for a reasonable price! My safety keychain items have pepper spray, a safety alarm, and a glass breaker. Even though the keychain is for safety, I also offer a lot of decorative items on the keychains like wallets, pom poms, tassels, and wristlets! For me, I want safety to be cute and something that you can have and carry with you every single day! One of the biggest things I want people to know is how much I care about all of my customers. One of my favorite things about my business is my packaging itself! Even though I am not able to meet customers and thank them, I want customers to absolutely love the packaging that they receive their keychain in. I have a lot of custom packaging, stickers, and little keychain freebies! I want customers to absolutely love the safety keychain that they receive especially when they open it!
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
Back in 2021 when I first started my keychain business, I started it all by myself with no help whatsoever. Even though I loved doing my own thing, I really did need help as my business was growing. My boyfriend at the time was in college and we did long-distance. My boyfriend is super technical and really good behind the scenes and he started to help me with my business. He wasn’t my business partner at the time but slowly he took my business to the next level. My boyfriend ended up moving back to my hometown and we started our business together and became business partners. With his help, I was able to sell out and grow my business more than anything I could ever imagine. We ended up getting married and we still run our business together till this day. He is truly the best business partner and my best friend. We compliment each other so well and I am so thankful for his help. I truly contribute to the success of my business to him being my business partner.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Back when I first started my business a few years ago, I was trying to get into nursing school. I actually started my business because I didn’t get into my nursing program one semester, but I didn’t think much of it. I never thought my keychain business would be more than just a part-time job but slowly my business began to grow. About six months after starting my business, I actually got into nursing school and it completely changed everything. I was balancing doing full-time nursing school while also doing sixty hours a week working on my keychain business. It was truly one of the hardest times of my life but also the point in my life where I learned the most. I would wake up at 4:00 a.m. to go to a clinical and then right afterwards, I was working all through the night packaging orders and working on my business. Looking back, I have no idea how I pushed through but I truly learned so much about myself. I ended up realizing that being an entrepreneur and having my business was truly my passion over the healthcare field. It was during that time of being resilient that I found my true passion and who I was made to be. I ended up switching my degree to marketing and advertising and it was one of the best decisions I have made.
