We were lucky to catch up with Hailey Hall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hailey, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
There are so many ways to reach success now, especially with the opportunities technology has provided alone. However, I personally feel that it’s important to have a “why” to reach TRUE success. When I’m talking about knowing “your why,” I mean having a clear vision for what you want, how it can benefit others, and what it takes to get there. Your why is a deeper meaning beyond simply selling a product or service.
My ultimate why and mission for my business is to help create a special, purposeful bath and body routine that helps you to see your purpose everyday. I have seen many times where businesses are started because it’s a profitable idea, however if the business owner doesn’t have their heart in it, the business suffers. Choosing to be an entrepreneur is simple, but finding your “why” is the ultimate key to success.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Hailey (Kellstrom) Hall, and I first started my entrepreneurial journey when I was 13 selling soap and other handcrafted products. Now, 11 years later at age 24 I have a successful soap business (Soaps by Hailey) and marketing business serving exclusively women (Moonflower Creative Co.).
I originally began making Melt and Pour soaps, and eventually upgraded to Cold Process Soap in 2017! Shortly after I added more products to my handmade lineup: Balms, Lip Balms, Body Scrubs, Clay Facial Masks, Body Lotions, Whipped Scrubs, Face Mists, Face Moisturizers, Serums, and Candles. Every year I attend the Handcrafted Soap and Cosmetic Guild Conference (HSCG) to further my education and network with others in my industry.
In 2018, I added workshops to my offerings and have hosted over 30 workshops since then, ranging from age 5 to 65! Teaching others how to make products they can immediately enjoy for themselves is one of the greatest joys!! I now mentor other soapmakers and am working on online courses for makers in business, coming Spring 2024!
Over the years I realized I had a great joy for teaching and mentoring others, prompting me to create my sister business, Moonflower Creative Co. Through my sister brand, I work closely with other women to create their dream businesses in an affordable and unique way.
Through the work of both businesses, I have experienced many highs and lows, however the ultimate lesson I come back to is the importance of community. Every interest or hobby has a community that welcomes you with open arms – and for that I am grateful.
A few fun facts about me! :
I was able to buy my first house at 21 with the income from my business.
I have a soap formula tattoo on my wrist.
I paid for my whole first year of college using scholarships received because of my business.
AND I have a German Shepherd named Rory.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Customer connection is one of my favorite topics in business because I feel it can truly skyrocket your business with a good strategy. I connect with my customers regularly in person at farmers markets, but I connect with even more customers on Instagram. The online and in-person community combined create the ultimate sales and best reviews!! Many of my customers have known me since I was 13, and have supported me as I’ve grown up. My customers have invested time. money, and heart into this business and I wouldn’t be where I am without them.
As my business has grown up with me, it has become an established brand. Being able to become an adult allowed me to learn a new skillset of product labeling and a new way of marketing. Because I was no longer a “teenager to support,” I knew I needed to nail down my brand design on all fronts. Creating and implementing stylish product labeling, talking to my customers, and effective social media marketing has fostered excellent brand loyalty for my small business.
Are there any books, videos, essays or other resources that have significantly impacted your management and entrepreneurial thinking and philosophy?
