We recently connected with Hailey Bright and have shared our conversation below.

Hailey, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you come up with the idea for your business?

My mom and I founded our residential and commercial interior design firm, Hello Bright Design, out of a genuine passion for helping people and creating spaces that deeply resonate with our clients, so that every time they step in the door they feel like they are truly HOME.

The idea for our company initially came about after we suffered the devastating loss of my dad. It was a huge loss for our family and few years after he passed away, my mom decided it might be best to move out of my childhood home to give her a fresh start. Our first challenging design came in this moment. We not only had to create a beautiful new home for my mom, but we had to design an uplifting space that felt like a safe haven so my mom could truly heal from the loss of my dad and begin the next amazing chapter of her life.

This initial experience set us on fire and gave us a strong passion for creating spaces others could positively thrive in.

Fast forward a couple of years and we turned our passion into a reality, opening Hello Bright Design, a thriving Residential and Commercial Interior Design firm in Atlanta, GA. Our firm handles projects all over the Southeast and Nationwide offering everything from full scale renovations to hourly design consulting. And with every design we always create more than just a beautiful space, we create a house our clients can truly call HOME.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

It’s a surprise to many clients I meet with that my mom and I came from backgrounds other than design. I came from the entertainment world and worked as tv host full-time before entering the design space and my mom was a kindergarten teach for over 30 years.

After my dad passed away, it fueled a strong passion in us for creating spaces others could positively thrive in. So, we opened Hello Bright Design, with the ultimate goal- To makes people’s lives better one home at a time.

When we opened the business we didn’t know if it would succeed or not, so it was definitely a gamble on our part. But I think as with a lot of things in life, if you have the drive, dedication, and pure joy for what it is that you do- you can always succeed. And that’s exactly what we did. We turned a small company that designed a few houses a year into a thriving design firm that handles residential and commercial projects nationwide. We offer everything from full scale renovations to hourly design consulting. We specialize in residential and commercial interiors, exteriors, 2D/3D professional renders, custom renovations, commercial spaces, art and wall installations, patio and landscape design, furniture, lighting, smart home technology, window treatments, and home decor.

I am so proud of what my mom and I have accomplished in such a relatively short amount of time. But, I have to say that it’s more than just the business- it’s the fact that I get to work with my mom every single day that has truly been one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Any advice for managing a team?

We’ve found that the best advice for maintaining high morale within your team is to give team members positive feedback, collaborate on ideas together, and to create an uplifting environment where people enjoy coming to work every day. Our motto is- if we aren’t having fun then why are we here?!

By creating an environment of positivity within our team, when a client is unhappy with their work, our team members are usually more than happy to make it right. This is because we are balancing those 5% of negative interactions, that are inherently going to come up because we work with the public on a daily basis, with 95% positive interactions.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

We have an amazing reputation of always making our clients happy no matter what. And, in the design world that’s a challenging thing to accomplish.

Before we started our company we did some research to learn how we could achieve this goal. We asked friends that had designers what it was like to have one and almost every single time we heard that their interior designer was one of their best and worst relationships in their life. After diving further into this discussion, we’d usually find out that was because when their designer brought in decor and designs they liked or when a project went smoothly they loved them and when a project didn’t go as planned, as will always happen at some point, they really disliked their designer.

So with that knowledge in mind, my mom and I decided at the start of our company that we’d always seek to make clients happy no matter what the circumstance. To be honest, this hasn’t always been easy. We’ve taken hits on materials, labor, and even income to achieve this goal. But ultimately taking a few hits has lead us to massive pay offs. This is because our clients know they can trust us, that we are always listening to their wants and needs, and that we are always on their side and striving to make them happy. This kind of trust and reliability has been the reason we continue to grow and flourish within the market.
