Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Haig Hovnanian. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Haig thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
For this question, I have to go back to April 5th, 2008. I was walking on the boardwalk in Venice Beach, California when I had an epiphany: Get in front of the camera, it could be good for you. As soon as I thought that, a seagull, let’s say, “unloaded” on my face! I took this as a sign of good luck, and the universe saying “good LUCK!” I believe in certain signs that pop up in your life, that was one I could not ignore.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve always been some kind of artist since I can remember. Whether is was performing on stage in a school play, playing the tympani in the school orchestra, painting abstract art and sculpting out of clay in college, or getting to act on stage and on screen later on in life, it’s always been apart of me, (it’s funny I’m just realizing this now as I type.)
I’ve always been the quirky, funny guy who uses slapstick and funny looks to get a laugh. When I play drums, (which I have been since I was 8), it’s a very different process, it’s like I have to pay attention more to stay on beat, but being funny is natural to me. They are one and the same though, having good rhythm helps me with my comedy and acting. Rhythm would be my biggest strength.
I’m proud of all my collaborations and artistic journeys because they have led me here.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist or creative is being able to see the world through the lens of someone who wants their world to be as pleasant and fulfilling as possible. It’s sometimes tiresome and daunting depending on the environment you might find yourself in, but for me, I try to always look at the world with an open mind.. I have a visual mind; that helps stimulate my creative juices. If I can get to a place where I can use what I know on one end, and take something from the existing world on the other end and make it into something new, that’s most rewarding!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Some books that I’ve read that have helped me on this creative journey are The Celestine Prophecy, The Four Agreements, and the Alchemist. They are all about one’s journey, and how you can get around in this world by being the best you can. Showing up along the way has always been the way.
