Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Haezy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Haezy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
I think the way I’m naturally wired I never feared taking risks, even as a kid. In fact, I’ve always been daring enough and enjoy the thrill and rush of taking risks. Now as I grow older, I’ve become a little more fearful and worrisome about some things. But that’s obviously because I have more to lose. I’ve built so much for my life over the years and yet still feel like I have so much more to achieve and experience. So I don’t think I’m done taking risks. I have so much I want to do and achieve so I’m definitely not done with the risks, that’s for sure.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Hae Hyun Choi but I go by my nickname ‘Haezy’. I’m a singer, songwriter, artist, fiancé, mother, daughter, sister and friend. I’ve been singing since I was a little girl but learned and grew over the years to become the artist that I am today. I enjoy listening to jazz, my partner’s classic vinyls, house dj mixes, r&b, soul and hip-hop every now and then. So my music tends to be all of these different genres into one.
I love music and I make music because I love it. I don’t feel the need to sell my love and myself for music in order to make money or to have fame off of it (although I do intend on making a lot of money). That’s why being a musician and artist is just a part of who I am. I collaborate with other artists because I love to do it, I put on shows and spend money out of my own pocket because I love to do it, I let myself be vulnerable in group settings especially when it comes to art and music because I love to do it. So I’m very proud of my relationship with music because Lord knows we’ve come a long way.
I hope to just leave a legacy in this world, whether it’s through music or through serving tables or through teaching kids music lessons or through helping a friend put on a great show… I just want to be the greatest I can be in everything I do and be remembered to even a stranger I encounter on the street as the kind, helpful and great person.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The main thing that drives me to continue to make music and art is purely the desire for ultimate freedom. There are so many restrictions we live under even in a “free” country. And the main thing we have as human beings is the ability to feel things and transmute those things into beautiful ways of expression. That’s why I don’t ever plan on stopping making music or art. I believe it’s all we have.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Before I became a mother, the biggest reward in being an artist was the achieving the goal of finishing a project and releasing it to the world. The feeling of being done with a task or a mission I set for myself.
After having my baby, that has evolved to being fulfilled whenever I see my child enjoy creating, making a mess and being curious through it all. The pureness of a child exploring new fun ways to express what they’re thinking or feeling is fascinating and rewarding to witness.
