We recently connected with Guy Snowdon and have shared our conversation below.
Guy, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I stumbled upon music quite unexpectedly during my school years. Originally aiming for cooking classes, which were fully booked, I opted for something fun and available: music lessons. To my surprise, I discovered a natural talent within weeks. Joining a band as both bassist and singer marked the beginning of my journey in independent music. Years later, a major manager heard my compositions and encouraged me to form a band and pursue a professional path. Unlike the typical office environment, music became my niche—a passion where creativity flourishes effortlessly. For me, it’s more than a job; it’s a calling. I relish the creative process: from songwriting and arranging to exploring the diverse sounds of instruments, all aimed at evoking emotions and delighting audiences. I feel incredibly fortunate to earn a living doing what I love.

Guy, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My primary focus is Guy Snowdon & The Citizens, my original rock band which recently released its second full-length album, alongside several singles and a live EP. We’re actively performing across Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and New York. Additionally, I’m part of a Queen Tribute project with talented musicians, and I frequently perform solo at intimate venues like restaurants and bars. Music and singing are my passions, and I’m versatile in various musical endeavors—from assisting independent songwriters with their compositions to producing music for commercials or greeting cards and contributing to local music podcasts. Known for my distinctive voice and ability to deliver high-quality, tailored work promptly, I operate my own recording studio and possess a strong ear for music. While my roots lie in rock, I’ve been exploring the creation of commercial songs that blend influences from country, pop, and ethnic music. Rather than relying on gimmicks or elaborate stage productions, I take pride in consistently delivering solid, heartfelt performances, complemented by my signature colorful 60s-style mod suits.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The music industry can be a tough terrain, often fraught with scams and false promises of support or promotion. Finding committed, like-minded collaborators who share my vision has been a persistent challenge, compounded by venues favoring crowd-drawing cover bands or undervaluing independent artists. In 2022, we embarked on a significant regional tour across six states, a venture that demanded immense time and financial commitment. Throughout the tour and its aftermath, I faced substantial challenges with my bandmates, eventually finding myself alone when they chose not to continue. It was a deeply deflating and exhausting experience. Yet, with unwavering support from friends, family, and management, I persevered, continuing to produce and release music independently. Today, I’m fortunate to collaborate with two exceptional musicians who share a genuine passion for music and the right attitude. I’m in a creatively fulfilling place now, poised to create impactful music.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
It’s really simple. Start by actively engaging with live, original music; attend local, independent venues and restaurants that champion the arts. Purchasing merchandise, following bands on social media, and sharing their posts amplifies their reach. Embrace digital platforms to explore new music aligned with your tastes. Advocate for original acts at venues and request local bands on radio stations. Engage with policymakers to ensure support for the arts and independent businesses. Some of history’s biggest bands began as local acts in dive bars or opening for larger bands—your next favorite artist could be just around the corner.
